Prime Day Kindle price predictions – the 2022 update

After Prime Day disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Amazon’s biggest mid-year shopping event should start on the second or third Monday of July.

We expect Prime Day 2022 to run on either July 11-12 or July 18-19. The two-day event starts usually on Monday, but some deals are revealed – and ready to pick up – even earlier.

Sometimes, just like in the case of Kindle Unlimited, you can grab the Prime Day exclusive deal already at the beginning of July.

Obviously, most Kindle lovers are waiting for the price cuts of the newest and shiniest model: the 6.8-inch Kindle Paperwhite, released in late 2021.

Two other models – the basic Kindle and the 3rd-generation Oasis, were released in 2019. Despite the rumors circulating from time to time, no upgrades have been released in 2022 so far.

It’s worth highlighting that currently no Kindle models are available for sale. Most variants are out of stock. If you are determined to buy the Kindle before Prime Day 2022, you can either get a refurbished one or go for a bundle.

Prime Day 2022 – which Kindle deals to expect?

Basic Kindle

• Expected Price: $59.99

The 10th-generation Kindle was introduced in April 2019, so it’s a very old model. As time flies, the more and more important reason to buy this particular model is an affordable price. Buying it at a regular price doesn’t make sense any longer. You should wait for price cuts, and the bigger they are, the better.

The biggest improvement, compared to Kindle 9, is a front-lighted display. Four LED lamps embedded in the edge of the screen spread an even light across the surface letting you read in the dark without a bedside lamp disturbing the sleep of your significant other.

This feature alone made the price of the 2019 Kindle go up by $10, to $89.99, compared to the previous-generation model.

As you see, the deals are pretty stable. You could save $30, no matter the generation and list price.

Basic Kindle model – what price would we see on Prime Day 2022? If the next-generation of the entry-level Kindle is not released before the Prime Day event, the 2019 model should be offered for less than $50. It’s the deal price that we saw during Black Friday 2021.

Can the price of the basic Kindle jump below $40? We don’t think so. It would depreciate the value of the device completely. Instead, you may expect extra benefits: a free Kindle Unlimited short-term plan and/or a credit for the purchase of ebooks in the Kindle Store.

Please note that the basic Kindle is currently not available. It may be a sign a new model is on the way, but it may also mean problems with restocking the current model.

Should I choose a Kindle or tablet?

If you are looking for a device specifically to read ebooks, it should be the Kindle. Pick up Amazon Fire or iPad, if you want to do more: write mails, browse the web, or check your social networks. Also, the Kindle is not good if you want to read comic books and magazines.

The 5th-generation Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 was released in October 2021. Its regular price is $139.99.

It’s an essential upgrade of Kindle Paperwhite 4, offering a larger 6.8-inch glare-free 300 ppi E-ink display, warm light, and USB-C. It comes with 8 GB of storage, and USB-C port for faster charging and data transfer. The battery life is extended to even 10 weeks.

Just like in the case of Amazon Fire HD 8, the new Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 is offered in two versions. The premium one is called “Signature.” It costs $189.99 (for the entry-level configuration) and comes with three exclusive features: 32 GB memory, auto-adjusting front light, and wireless charging.

Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 comes together with dedicated Amazon accessories: fabric covers, leather covers, cork covers, wireless charging dock, as well as a new antimicrobial screen protector from NuPro.

There is a growing number of dedicated or compatible Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 case covers, so you don’t have to rely on original Amazon cases.

Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 – Prime Day price predictions

The 6.8-inch Paperwhite is the newest model in the Kindle range. Usually, the newly introduced models are offered at only slightly reduced prices.

However, Amazon surprised everyone during Black Friday & Cyber Monday 2021, offering the newest 6.8-inch Paperwhite for $104.99 – $25 below the regular price. You were able to save 18%, or the equivalent of the solid third-party case cover.

Can we expect the price of the Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 to drop below $100 during Prime Day 2022? It depends on whether a new Kindle model is launched before the event.

If the new basic Kindle or the Oasis (or any new Kindle model in the portfolio) comes out in June or July 2022, the entire attention will be drawn to them. In this case, the prices of other models would go down to lower levels to keep them attractive and prevent the new model from going out of stock too quickly.

Therefore, we expect the Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 to be offered at $104.99 if no new model is released, and at $99.99 otherwise.

1. Larger 6.8-inch glare-free 300 ppi E-ink display. The new display is 13% larger than in the previous-generation Kindle Paperwhite.
2. Slim, waterproof (IPX8) design with edge-to-edge glass front.
3. 8 GB of storage (Regular) or 32 GB of storage (Signature).
4. Warm light. In the evening, you can switch from blue light to a warmer tone to reduce eye strain.
5. USB-C port. Paperwhite 6.8 is the first Kindle to sport the USB-C port for faster charging and data transfer.
6. Up to 10 weeks on a single battery charge. Recharging via USB-C charger takes less than 3 hours.

Which Kindle is better for me: the basic or Paperwhite?

If all you need is a convenient e-reading device with front light and long battery life, choose the basic Kindle. If you like to read in a bathtub or on a beach and want to have peace of mind, go for Kindle Paperwhite. Plus, if the screen size matters to you, you should pick up the Paperwhite.

Is Paperwhite 6.8 Signature Edition worth it?

The Signature edition costs $50 more ($190 instead of $140). For that price, you get wireless charging, auto-adjusting front light, and 32 GB of internal memory. Wireless charging in the case of the device that needs to be recharged every few weeks is a waste of money.

There is only one question you should ask yourself: how often do I have to adjust the display brightness in my current Kindle? If you don’t do that, you don’t need the auto-adjusting Signature variant.

The most advanced Kindle e-reader to date, the 3rd-generation Oasis, was launched in summer 2019, so it’s already three years old.

With the introduction of the newest Kindle Paperwhite, the Oasis suddenly looks not interesting enough. The Paperwhite has the 6.8-inch warm light display. The Oasis has the 7-inch warm light display. The Paperwhite costs $139.99, the Oasis almost twice as much.

The only benefit left is the asymmetric design of the Oasis that helps keep it in one hand. The gravity point was moved to the side, by placing an internal battery and most other components in the grip area. Thanks to that, your hand won’t hurt even if you keep the device in the same position for long hours.

When it comes to Prime Day, the rule so far was that Kindle Oasis didn’t join the list of discounted Amazon devices.

It changed in 2020, when the Oasis was offered during Prime Day at the price reduced by $75. The next year, the saving was $65 on the entry-level confuguration.

During Black Friday 2021, the Oasis was offered for $174.99, and we expect to see the same price during Prime Day 2022.

What are the biggest benefits of Kindle Oasis 3?

1. Adjustable warm light that lets you control the color of the front lighted screen. In the evening, you can replace blue light with a warmer tone to reduce eye strain and minimize the negative effect on sleep.
2. Large, 7-inch touchscreen that displays crisp text and helps enjoy larger documents with fixed layout. It’s the largest currently available Kindle model.
3. Asymmetric design that shifts the center of gravity to one side to help you keep the e-reader comfortably in one had for long hours.
4. Audible player combined with 8 or 32 GB internal storage to enjoy Audible audiobooks to the fullest.

Is Kindle Oasis worth buying?

The Oasis is not the newest model, but it’s still the most original one, with the asymmetric design and a large 7-inch display. It will surely become one of the legendary e-reader models thanks to its uncommon design and innovative features.

However, compared to the 6.8-inch Paperwhite, the Oasis is worth its price only if you get it for $150-175.

Should I wait for the next-generation Kindle Oasis?

We are not sure there will be the next Oasis.

It’s probable that Amazon will introduce a much larger device that would be the third model in the Kindle range. And it would have a more classic look and design, more like a big Kindle Paperwhite.
