If you are looking for new ebooks to add to your e-reading app or device, forget about Kindle, Kobo or Apple, and head to Smashwords instead.
Smashwords is a leading source of ebooks published by independent authors from around the world. The platform includes over 540,000 ebooks across almost all categories.
The best part is that if you buy an ebook from Smashwords, you won’t have any problem adding it to your Kindle or Nook e-reader, or a book reading app on your iPad or Android tablet. All Smashwords books are DRM-free, and it means they are fully accessible and manageable no matter which app or device you use (just make sure you pick up the right file format – more on this at the end of the post).
Many authors use Smashwords ecosystem to publish their books to popular ebook stores, such as Apple Books, Barnes & Noble Nook, or Kobo. There is, however, one reason you should head to Smashwords directly: an annual mid-year ebook sale.
Offered for the 12th time, the annual Smashwords Summer/Winter Sale, runs through the end of July. As many as 55,000 books are on sale – 10% of the entire catalog.
You can browse the books by discount level (25, 50, 75 or 100% off), and narrow down the results based on the length and category. Featured books are highlighted on the front page of the promotion, but you can browse entire catalog by clicking the “+” icon in the top right corner of each section.

All six books from The Witness series by Rebecca Forster are on sale. The first volume, Hostile Witness, is free to download, while five other books are 75% off each – instead of $3.99 they cost $1.
Law of the Lycans, a paranormal romance series by Nick Charles, is also 75% off, except the first title which you can download for free any time.
