With the introduction of two new colors, Plum and Sage, Kindle Paperwhite offers now four Fire-like color variants – and white is still not among them.
At the time of launch in November 2018, the 4th-generation Kindle Paperwhite was available only in Black. Everybody was wondering when the white version would become available, and some users were hoping to see it in summer 2019.
Then, in June 2019, the new-generation 7-inch Amazon Fire tablet was introduced, offering a refreshed color code. Three desaturated variants – Twilight Blue, Plum, and Sage – completed the default Black, and were a totally new approach to color identity, compared to intensive yellows, reds, and blues of the earlier-generation Fire tablet range.
A few weeks later, Amazon launched a new color variant for the Paperwhite: Twilight Blue. At the same time, three new color variants of the original Kindle Paperwhite leather cover were released: Twilight Blue, Sage, and Plum.
It was just a matter of time to see two remaining colors to join the range, especially that they were already available in the Chinese Amazon store.
It took a year to do so, but finally they are here! You can now choose from four Kindle Paperwhite color variants: Black, Twilight Blue, and the new ones: Sage, and Plum. They are the same as the ones of Amazon Fire 7 tablet, and match current Fire tablet color identity. All versions come with a black glass front, and a full Amazon logo on the back.
Adjusting Kindle Paperwhite colors to those of Fire range looks like Amazon’s move towards more integrity between e-readers and tablets, quite possibly to keep device switching users within Amazon ecosystem.
On the other hand, there are still many inconsistencies, and they are not only a result of a product life cycle. For instance, the entry level 2019 Kindle has on the back an arrow smile instead of a full Amazon logo. And, based on available colors of original case covers (red and blue, among them), there are no signs that this particular model would get a color update any time soon.
So far, besides the United States, Kindle Paperwhite is available in four color variants only in Amazon stores localized in China, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The remaining question is when (or whether at all) Amazon will introduce the white Kindle Paperwhite.
