This simple guide will let you use an iconic composition notebook design as a Kindle screensaver image.

Custom Kindle lockscreen covers are getting popular these days, thanks to a TikTok hit video that talks about how to replace the default screensaver image with your own one.

All you have to do is create an image, convert it to an epub format, and send the file to your Kindle. Then, go to Settings » Device Options on your Kindle, and enable Display Cover.

This way, you can customize the Kindle lockscreen image with anything you like. You can use a graphic program or an online design tool, such as Canva or Pixlr, to upload and modify one of your photos or create an image from scratch.

If you are a fan of composition notebooks, I will show you how you quickly create a ready-to-use image that you can customize with your name or text. It will take no more than 30 seconds to have the design ready.

The trick is that you can use Zazzle online platform to customize the design and then just make a screenshot.

Zazzle is one of the leading online stores connecting designers and consumers. I have created a few notebook designs here, and anyone can customize them by just typing a name.

Obviously, you don’t have to buy anything on Zazzle. Just use the personalization option to add your name and make a screenshot that will have a resolution that’s suitable for a Kindle display.

Later in the post, you will see four of my composition notebook designs. All you have to do is follow this simple guide.

How to personalize a composition notebook design?

1. Pick up any of the covers listed below and follow the link to the Zazzle store.

2. On Zazzle, click on either the “Personalize” button or “Personalize this template” link.

3. Start typing your name or custom text in the text area. The text will appear on the design as you type.

4. Use the screenshot tool on your computer to grab the cover image.

5. The notebook design has the proportions that are close to the proportions of Kindle models (except the Oasis and Scribe, which are much wider).

To get the proportions that would fit the display of your Kindle perfectly, you can crop and resize an image using Image Resizer. It’s the simplest and most user-friendly image modification tool I’ve found online.

Here are the screen resolutions of the popular Kindle models:

▸ Kindle 11 (2022) – 1072 ×  1448 px
▸ Kindle Paperwhite 5 (2021) – 1236 × 1648 px
▸ Kindle Scribe (2022) – 1860 ×  2480 px
▸ Kindle Oasis 3 (2019) – 1264 × 1680 px

What is a composition notebook?

The pseudo-marbling composition notebook pattern emerged in Western Europe in the mid-19th century. However, the origins of this timeless design, that’s loved by users all over the world, date back to the 12th century Japan.

Composition notebook is one of the most popular designs picked for Kindle case covers. Imagine: you can have it not only as a case cover, but also the actual front of the Kindle itself.

An inseparable part, and something that completes the beauty of the composition book, is its label. Crafted, cut, and stamped by hand, it’s a proof that everything you write inside is exceptional.

Classic composition notebook

This vintage artwork is inspired by a legendary composition notebook with a unique dual-color pattern and semi-oval label. It’s available in eight colors, including black, green, and pink.

For the best contrast, I recommend using the black variant shown and visualized below.

Suminagashi paper composition notebook

This modern, unique pattern is a photorealistic replica of the classic Japanese Suminagashi marbling.

Suminagashi marbling, also known as “floating ink,” is an ancient Japanese paper marbling technique. The process involves floating inks on the surface of a water basin and then pressing paper onto the surface to capture the patterns.

Mulberry paper composition notebook

The artwork lets you admire the natural beauty of papier-mâché. This pattern is inspired by the look of mulberry paper with full-sized leaves. I’ve used a modern label design to amplify the gentle structure of the background.

Marbled paper composition notebook

This vintage design recreates the feel of an outstanding marbled paper technology used for classic notebooks in the 18th and 19th century. The distressed label comes with a retro font face and other elements that were common in the classic composition notebook design.

New features have just been added to Send to Kindle https://ebookfriendly.com/new-features-added-to-send-to-kindle-2023/ https://ebookfriendly.com/new-features-added-to-send-to-kindle-2023/#comments Fri, 29 Sep 2023 16:57:51 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=158296 The improvements were made to pdf documents with preserved original layout, as well as files in epub and other formats.

Amazon is right now sending out emails to Kindle users informing about two major improvements made to the Send to Kindle feature.

These changes apply to documents that are being added to your Kindle library through the Kindle e-reader or the app for iOS, Android, and Mac.

Improvements to pdf files

First of all, from now on, if you import a pdf file with the “Keep original layout” option enabled, the imported document will support text selection, search, and hyperlinks.

You will be able to highlight the text, as well as make text notes. Smart Lookup feature will also work in this document.

Improvements to epub, html, txt, and rtf files

Do you want to add to your Kindle library a file in epub, htm, html, txt or rft file format, or a doc, docx or pdf with “Make layout adjustable” enabled?

The new feature will let you benefit from Page Flip on your Kindle or in a Kindle app. Page turn animation is now also supported, as well as some Enhanced Typesetting features.

Page Flip is an advanced Kindle book navigation feature that makes it easy to explore books without loosing your latest read position.

Send to Kindle is Amazon’s free tool that allows you to send documents to your Kindle library on your Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, or Kindle app.

You can upload documents through the web, an authorized email address, the Kindle app for iOS and Android devices, or a Send to Kindle application (if available).

It’s worth highlighting that all documents sent through Send to Kindle are protected with end-to-end encryption.

Note: Just a reminder that since the beginning of 2023 you can’t add mobi files to your Kindle. Epub is now the file format that’s accepted by Amazon.

How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited ebooks https://ebookfriendly.com/how-to-spot-ai-generated-kindle-unlimited-ebooks/ https://ebookfriendly.com/how-to-spot-ai-generated-kindle-unlimited-ebooks/#comments Tue, 04 Jul 2023 12:27:23 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=157521 Spotting AI-generated books in Kindle Unlimited

AI-generated books may seriously harm the publishing industry, and digital subscriptions are prone to be hit the hardest.

There is a growing list of books published with the help of artificial intelligence.

Everyone knows the story of Ammaar Reshi, a product manager for a Silicon Valley fintech company, who used ChatGPT and Midjourney to create a children’s book Alice and Sparkle

Since August 2022, a Canadian artist Tim Boucher published almost 100 books that were co-created by AI. Boucher says he needs between 6 and 8 hours to create and publish each of his books. Imagine, a single author capable of publishing hundreds of books a year.

Obviously, ChatGPT takes credits for most of what happens in the publishing industry right now.

Currently, there are already almost 1,000 ebooks in the Kindle Store that are co-authored by AI. Specifically, ChatGPT is listed as one of their authors. These books were created by authors responsible enough to admit they use ChatGPT.

And now we come to the essence of the big problem that’s flooding Kindle Unlimited: lots of newly published books were generated by AI, and you don’t even know about it.

What’s even worse, many of these books made it to the top 100 Kindle bestseller lists. It was first discovered by an indie author Caitlyn Lynch on Twitter (here is a cover story on the Vice):

💬 Take a look at the Best Sellers in Teen & Young Adult Contemporary Romance eBooks top 100 chart. I can see 19 actual legit books. The rest are AI nonsense clearly there to click farm.

How is that possible? It’s directly connected with how digital subscriptions work. As you can download any book at no extra cost, you do it instantly without checking out its content.

And when you open the book on your e-reader or in a book reading app, you just need to read roughly the length of the free sample to make this book considered as read.

The story about nonsense AI Kindle Unlimited books broke at the end of June 2023, and most of these titles are not on the main Kindle bestseller lists anymore. However, they are still on the top 100 lists for subcategories. Luckily, these books have several things in common, and I will discuss them below.

How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited ebooks

The titles are usually written in capital letters

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - titles in capital letters
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – titles are written in capital letters

It may obviously change over time, as the creators of these books with try to adapt. But today, most of these AI books come with titles written in CAPITAL LETTERS.

I am not talking about the title that appears on the cover art, but the title that’s a part of the product page description on Amazon.

Here is a screenshot of the Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult category

Authors have Asian names

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - Asian authors
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – the books are published by authors with Asian names

If you spot a book that is published by someone called Lam Dich Quan, Phung Linh Vang or Phuong Tuong, it strongly suggests that its content was generated by AI.

Here is the same screenshot with the highlighted names.

Book covers are made from a template

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - the same cover art
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – the same cover art

If you browse Kindle bestsellers lists or search results pages, and notice books with the same cover artwork and different titles, the chances are big these books are AI generated.

Obviously, there are many books that use the same cover artwork, naming only the books from the same series, or free Kindle books that are available in the Kindle Store.

However, compared to book series, the same cover art is used not for a few titles but dozens of them.

Again, let’s have a look at the Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult catgory.

Same cover art but different authors

If you re still not sure whether the KU book was AI-generated or not, you can compare cover art. If the books with the same cover art template are published by different Asian authors, these books are AI-generated (see the screenshot above).

Books are under 100 pages

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - under 100 pages
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – they are under 100 pages

I have run through the entire list of Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult catgory, to spot the AI titles. Then I opened them their product detail pages.

Out of 24 titles in the Top 100 Teen & Young Adult bestsellers that I considered to be AI generated:

▸ Only one title had a print length longer that 100 (FREE MUSIC by Lam Dich Chinh), with 118 pages).
▸ 13 books were shorter than 50 pages.

Why are these books short? It’s not only about the ease of generating the content. In the case of the digital subscription it’s also about meeting conditions of the read title. The shorter the book, the biggers the chances to get the reader swipe past the required length.

Published in 2023, no publisher

The final place to find out, if the book was generated by AI or not is the “Product details” section.

None of the books I have tested included the “Publisher” field in the Product details” section.

If all the conditions listed above were met, and if the book was published in 2023 or later, you can be sure is was not written by a human but by an AI tool.

How to turn pages in Kindle iPad app with just your voice https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-ipad-iphone-app-turn-pages-voice-control/ https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-ipad-iphone-app-turn-pages-voice-control/#comments Thu, 02 Feb 2023 15:42:06 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=157404 In this simple guide, you will learn how to read ebooks on your iPad completely hands-free. You can turn pages with just your voice, using a clever feature called Voice Control.

If you read on your iPad for long hours, you know this pain. Holding the device all the time is not convenient at all. Especially, if you switch positions frequently.

Obviously, you can always use accessories for hands-free reading.

However, they don’t solve another problem – the need to touch the display again and again. Ebooks are designed to make reading easier than ever before, right?

Fortunately, the iPad comes with a feature that allows you to swipe left with just your voice.

The feature is called Voice Control. It sits in the Settings app, in Accessibility section.

Voice Control allows you to control your device by speaking commands. With Voice Control, you can open apps, perform touch gestures, create reminders, or make text edits – all with your voice. It is available in over 20 languages and works with several languages at once.

I will guide you through the process using a Kindle app for iPad. This tip also works for other book-reading apps, such as Kobo, Apple Books, Nook, or Google Play Books.

And, obviously, you can use the following guide to enable the voice-operated page turn on your iPhone as well.

Place your iPad on a stand, grab a coffee in one hand, a donut in the other, and enjoy the newest novel from your favorite author to the fullest.

How to turn pages in Kindle iPad app using just your voice

How to use Voice Control to swipe left

1. Go to the Settings app, find “Accessibility” on the list, and then tap “Voice Control” to turn it on.

Find Voice Control feature on the iPad

2. If you haven’t used Voice Control before, tap “Set Up Voice Control” at the top. A pop-up window will appear. Follow the steps to enable the setting.

If you set up Voice Control before, just turn it on.

3. With Voice Control enabled, we now turn on the swipe left function.

Tap “Customize Commands” and then find “Basic Gestures” on the list. Tap to open it.

Enable Basic Gestures in Voice Control on the iPad
Enable Basic Gestures in Voice Control on the iPad

4. Scroll down the list to find “Swipe left” feature. Tap to enable it.

Enable Swipe Left basic gesture in Voice Control on the iPad

Here, you can also decide whether you want a confirmation every time you perform the gesture. I would leave the confirmation step unchecked.

Done! From now on, every time you say “Swipe left” your Kindle app (or any other book-reading app) will turn a page. The trick works both in a portrait and landscape mode.

How to quickly enable and disable Voice Control

When the Voice Control setting is enabled, your iPad is listening all the time for voice prompts. It may drain the battery fast.

That’s why, it makes sense to enable the voice-operated page turn only for reading sessions, and disable it when you finish.

There is an easy way to enable/disable Voice Control. You can do it using the Control Center.

1. Go to the Settings app, find “Accessibility” on the list and tap it.

2. Scroll down the list of available options to find “Accessibility Shortcut” at the bottom. Tap it.

3. Scroll down the list of available options to find “Voice Control”. Tap to enable it.

Done! From now on, you can enable or disable “Swipe left” voice command via the Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the display, and tap Accessibility Shortcut in the Control Center widget.

Tip: If you don’t see Accessibility in the Control Center, you may need to add it to the list of visible options. Go to Settings app, then “Control Center”. On the “More Controls” list, find “Accessibility Shortcut” and tap it. Done!

Amazon Kindle Scribe e-note taking e-reader / Image: Amazon

You can save $65 in total, if you decide to get a version with a free 4-month Kindle Unlimited plan.

What are your New Year Resolutions? To read more, learn faster, write better? It looks like Kindle Scribe is destined for you. The only problem is that it costs $340, and you can’t expect a price cut any time soon.

Kindle Scribe is Amazon’s most innovative device in years. It’s designed for both reading and writing.

The device sports the 10.2-inch glare-free 300 ppi touchscreen display with front and warm light, asymmetric Oasis-style glass front, and a USB-C port.

Most importantly, the Scribe supports handwriting. You can choose from two compatible pens – Basic or Premium – that come free with a chosen variant. It also comes with several templates for handwritten notes.

The first, a rather symbolic, price cut may come in March 2023, for the National Reading Month. However, I believe to see any reasonable Kindle Scribe deal on Prime Day 2023, the soonest.

If getting the Scribe would boost your New Year resolutions, especially when it comes to reading more books, you can take advantage of a new limited-time promotion that has just been revealed.

Add Kindle Scribe to cart, and use the code READWRITE25 at checkout to get a $25 credit that you can use to get ebooks from the Kindle Store. You will be able to redeem your code within 45 days from the shipment date.

$25 is roughly an equivalent of two fully priced books, but if you are determined to hunt for Kindle deals, you can get 25 books for $0.99 each.

What’s more, if you pick up a variant with a free 4-month Kindle Unlimited membership, you will save an extra $40 on Kindle books that are included in the Kindle Unlimited catalog.

The promotion ends on January 4, 2023, 5:00 PM Pacific time. It seems like a lot of time, but I use it to find out whether Kindle Scribe is the device that you would love – or hate.

Kindle Scribe with $25 ebook credit and 4 free months of Kindle Unlimited? It sounds like you won’t need to buy any additional Kindle books to meet your Reading 52 Challenge this year.

Every year, at least a few of the books that enter the public domain are worth adding to your reading list or reading challenge.

Book Riot has just released a list of the books that enter the public domain in 2023 in the United States. Unfortunately, they link to paid versions of these books on Amazon – which is against the idea of the public domain.

Why should you buy a book today, if you can get it free of charge in a few months, on public domain platforms, such as Project Gutenberg or Internet Archive?

And the 2023 public domain book list is highly attractive. You can find here Franz Kafka’s Amerika, Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne, Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, Pomes Penyeach by James Joyce or Ernest Hemingway’s Men Without Women.

All you have to do is wait for these titles to be released by the public domain sites. I recommend checking out Project Gutenberg every few weeks. You can add the list of books added in the last 30 days as a bookmark to your browser. On a Mac computer, press Command+D, and on a PC press Control+D.

For your convenience, I have included the links to search term (title+author) on Project Gutenberg. Once the book is released, you will be able to find it in the search results page.

You can add books to your e-reader or e-reading app by picking up EPUB3. This file format is compatible with Kobo, Apple Books, Nook, Google Play Books – and also Amazon Kindle (mobi is no longer supported).

Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to encourage the creation and distribution of ebooks. It is the oldest digital library, with over 60,000 free ebooks.

Most downloaded ebooks from Project Gutenberg: Nov. 15 – Dec. 15, 2022

Almost 7.5 million free ebooks were downloaded from Project Gutenberg since mid-November 2022. Apart from all-time classics, you will find on the list three picaresque novels by Tobias Smollett.

Are you making a list of books to read during Christmas, or include in the New Year’s reading challenge?

Why not checking out the titles that are free to download because they are available in the public domain?

A leading source of free public domain books is Project Gutenberg. Founded in 1971 by Michael Hart, it’s the longest established digital library.

Currently, the site offers free access to over 60,000 eBooks that can be read online or downloaded in a variety of formats, for all possible ebook apps and e-reading devices.

The site provides useful stats about ebook downloads, Top 100 Ebooks in the Last 20 Days, where you can see the most popular titles based on how many times they were downloaded or read online.

Between November 15 and December 15, 2022, users downloaded from Project Gutenberg almost 7.5 million ebook files. Books from the Top 100 ranking were downloaded over 3 million times.

You will find on the list such well-known classic books as The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, or Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

Surprisingly, these iconic classics don’t occupy the top of the list. Apparently, users are no longer interested in the books everyone knows. They are heading to Project Gutenberg to discover new books and read lesser-known authors.

Have you heard of Tobias Smollett, a Scottish poet and author living in the 18th century? He is best known for his picaresque novels.

Picaresque novels are stories of an anti-hero’s adventures in a disreputable world. They usually feature a roguish protagonist who is forced to rely on his wits, charm, and cunning to survive misadventures.

Three books by T. Smollett made it to the Top 20 Most Downloaded Ebooks, including The Adventures of Roderick Random. These three books alone were downloaded over 400,000 times in the last 30 days!

You have no other choice. You should add one of Smollett’s picaresque novels to your reading list.

You can download ebooks from Project Gutenberg to any e-reader or book-reading app. Make sure to pick up the file called EPUB3. This file format is compatible with Kobo, Apple Books, Nook, Google Play Books, and Amazon Kindle, among other platforms.

Yes, you should pick up EPUB3 for your Kindle or Kindle app. It’s because Amazon Kindle moved away from mobi format, and now it’s epub that’s officially supported.

These 20 most gifted books will make perfect gifts in 2023 https://ebookfriendly.com/most-gifted-books-best-gifts/ https://ebookfriendly.com/most-gifted-books-best-gifts/#respond Fri, 09 Dec 2022 15:33:03 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=156677 The most appropriate books to gift are the ones that proved to be great gifts. Here are the most popular books bought as gifts on Amazon.

Haruki Murakami once said, “If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”

It applies perfectly to reading, but when it comes to picking up a book to give as a gift, you should rather follow the opposite direction – and gift what everyone else is gifting.

Why are most gifted books the best possible way to avoid that ugly moment when someone is unboxing your present and finds it irrelevant?

There is a general problem with other book recommendation tools: book bestseller lists, book awards, book reviews, or book recommendation from influencers.

Publications included in these lists are great when you are looking for something you’d like to read yourself.

The thing is that not every best selling book would make a great gift. And not every book that’s a great gift would make it to a bestseller list.

The problem with book reviews or book recommendations is even simpler. Someone, even the most renowned authority, can’t know what other bookworms love to read.

What about most gifted books? Thousands of people who have the same goal – find an appropriate gift – can’t be wrong. And you can follow their decisions because they are recommending specific books using their wallets.

Did you know that Amazon has a list of top 100 books ordered as gifts

For obvious reasons, the ranking is mostly populated by books for children, but you can also find here the ones that would make a perfect gift for an adult bookworm in your life.

If you’d like to learn more about the most popular books ordered as gifts on Amazon, make sure to read our expensive guide: Things to know about Amazon’s most gifted books and audiobooks.

Most gifted books are the safest gifts you can buy. However, if you still worry that the book you choose will not be met by the burst of enthusiasm, you should look for a non-book gift for a book lover in your life.

Tip: Most books in the following list are available in print (paperback and/or hardcover), Kindle edition, and as an Audible audiobook.

The latest, revolutionary Kindle Scribe device is not an e-reader any longer.

Equipped with a large 10.2-inch display, it lets you make handwritten notes, bringing the way you read and learn to a whole new level.

The 1st-generation Kindle Scribe sports the 300 ppi 10.2-inch glare-free touchscreen display that’s enhanced by both the front and warm light.

The e-reader is offered in three storage variants (16, 32 and 64 GB). It comes equipped with a fast USB-C port, and has the asymmetrical look of the Oasis.

You will need a protective cover for your Kindle Scribe more than any other Kindle model. It’s because you will use the Scribe more actively – write on it, not just hold in your hand.

As the Scribe is a new device, with a different size and proportions, new cases from third-party producers are revealed slower than for standard-size Kindle models.

The first, most interesting ones, are listed below.

This overview is developing. Please come back in a few days or weeks to see the newest arrivals.

▸ The case features a vertical tri-fold design and folds back through the top edge.

▸ You have two options to attach a stylus. You can use a dedicated holder that’s located at the bottom edge. Or you can attach the pen magnetically to the side of your device.

▸ You can choose from three color variants that are in line with 11th-generation Kindle color code: Black, Denim, and Rose.

▸ The cover opens and closes to wake up or put your Kindle Scribe to sleep.

▸ The fabric cover is the most affordable variant of official Amazon cases for Kindle Scribe. Yet, it’s pricier than any third-party alternative. It costs $59.99, and you can’t expect a price cut any time soon.

▸ If you prefer a design that will help you get that good old feel of a paper notebook, you should go for a classic folio case cover.

▸ The cover is crafted using techniques similar to traditional book binding. There is a faux leather material on the outside and soft microfiber inside.

▸ All layers combined provide a solid protection not only against dust, but also bumps and shock.

▸ The cover comes with a kickstand and two hand straps that will let you use it with either the right or left hand.

▸ There are four colors to choose from: Black, Blue, Pink, and Navy.

▸ The regular price is $32.99. It’s too early to see price cuts.

▸ If you are going to invest in a case cover, and if you believe the best one comes from Amazon, you can go for a bundle, not a case.

▸ Kindle Scribe Essentials bundle includes, besides the device (16 GB), two other elements: a vertical fabric cover in one of three colors, and a power adapter.

▸ What you need to know is that Kindles no longer come with a power adapter. If you need a new charger, you will have to buy it separately – or get a bundle.

▸ The total value of the three elements in the bundle is $420, but you can get it for $380 – and it’s the regular price of the bundle. From time to time, you may see the price drop by even $40 more.

▸ The case comes with a built-in kickstand that will allow you to position the Scribe at the right angle when in portrait mode.

Our pick: Best vertical stand for Kindle Scribe

▸ If you’d love to have the official Kindle Scribe but, but it’s far too expensive, you can pick up an alternative from a third-party producer.

▸ The case comes with a stylus loop at the bottom edge. Open sides let you attach the pen magnetically.

▸ A ribbon built into the front cover keeps the cover closed and prevents it from opening accidentally.

▸ So far, only the Black color is offered. The price is $35.99, which is $25 less than the fabric cover from Amazon.

Our pick: Best composition book case for Kindle Scribe

▸ Amazon Kindle Scribe, with its handwritten document markup and ability to create handwritten notes, annotations, and checklists, is a modern personalization of a composition notebook.

▸ What is the symbol of composition notebooks? An iconic pseudo-marbling pattern that emerged in Western Europe in the mid-19th century.

▸ This classic design is now available on a Kindle Scribe case! It’s offered by Fintie, and comes with a stylus loop and the auto sleep & wake support.

▸ The Scribe is a large device that’s heavier than the Kindle you’ve had before. There is no reason to add to it an extra bulk.

▸ The composition notebook case from Fintie is a slimshell case with a thin front cover and a solid backshell – both lined with a soft microfiber to protect against dust and scratches.

▸ The case comes in a range that also includes Library, Lilac Marble, and Alpine Green designs.

▸ The price at the time of updating this post is set at $39.99. We haven’t seen price drops yet.
