20 bookworm gifts for every occasion in 2023 https://ebookfriendly.com/new-gifts-for-book-readers/ https://ebookfriendly.com/new-gifts-for-book-readers/#comments Thu, 17 Nov 2022 00:42:00 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=140890 Don’t look for mainstream gifts for bookworms everyone likes and recommends. The book lover in your life is too exceptional to receive something common.

Are you looking for a fresh-new gift for a bookworm in your life, but what you see in the gift roundups are the same items over and over again?

The problem with most book-related gift lists around the web – including the ones curated by leading websites, such as Oprah Daily, Popsugar, My Modern Met, or Esquire – is that they list items that may potentially meet the most versatile needs.

As a result, the gifts you find elsewhere are too common, too banal, too mainstream, and definitely not exceptional enough.

In the newest, 2023 update of our list of the best gifts for bookworms, we took a different approach. We focused on finding unique items that are on opposite sides of the landscape.

One list puts together the most innovative gifts for bookworms. You can find here the newest gadgets that may take the pleasure of reading to a whole new level. You would not believe you can use some of these items for reading!

The other list collects the most vintage gifts for bookworms, and is from the book lover’s paradise: the world of old libraries, letterpress books, retro design, and magical atmosphere.

Finding items for this list is an ongoing process, and we add new items a few times a year. As a matter of fact, these gifts are worth giving all year long, not only for Christmas, but also Valentine’s Day, National Reading Month, Mother’s and Father’s Day, or for a happy start of a new year in college.

Highly innovative or 100% vintage? Which gift are you planning to give to the bookworm this year?

20 most interesting gifts for bookworms

1. Clever and compact reading light

Clever and innovative reading light for glasses - best gifts for bookworms
Clever and innovative reading light that you can attach to your glasses / Image: Amazon

Our pick: Best reading light for versatile needs

▸ A reading light is a great gift idea for anyone who loves reading both electronic and paper books. Even if you have an e-reader with a front light, you will need an extra light if you switch to a good old paperback.

▸ Most reading lamps come with a clip that lets you attach them to the book. It’s not a good idea because the lamp disturbs page turning. The light should be attached to your head, so that it can enlighten the space you actually look at.

▸ A German brand Nachteule offers a clever book light that got Red Dot Design Award. This patented design cannot be attached to the book or wrapped around your neck book. Just clip it onto your glasses and start reading!

▸ As the light is extremely light (only 9 grams), you can also clip it to earphones or hair accessories. Those who don’t wear glasses can use a slim headband that’s included in the box (which, by the way, is a gift box).

▸ The soft warm light is perfect for reading, but also any other activity that needs a focused light at short distance. The built-in rechargeable battery is enough to read 200 pages.

▸ Nachteule reading light is one of the coolest gadgets for modern book lovers. Its price is set at $49.99, but currently, you can buy it for $39.99.

Our score: 8.3/10

2. Lap desk with sliding lid

▸ We have explored the category of lap desks to find the one that would fit suit avid booklovers the most. And there it is!

▸ From Rossie Home comes a lap desk that puts together numerous helpful features. The base is soft and tapered for the convenient use on your laps. There is a handle so that you can easily carry the desk with you.

▸ And finally, there is a sliding lid that reveals several storage compartments, smaller and bigger: for a laptop, books or tablets, small accessories, or pens.

The solid design of this alternative solution to a bed table is made to support tasks of all kinds, whether you use it for homework, creative activities, or watching shows on your tablet.

– Producer’s description

▸ The price at the time of updating this post is $69.99, but you can hunt for price cuts that bring the price down to under $50.

Our score: 8.2/10

3. Invisible, origami style stand and handle

Origami stand and bookend - best gifts for bibliophiles
Origami stand and bookend for e-readers and print books / Image: Amazon

▸ My problem with most tablet stands is they they are too technological: too much metal, too heavy, and too gadgetty. You will hardly associate them with reading.

▸ There is one exception – the stand offered by Moft. It feels like an e-reader cover, because it’s designed in the same manner and uses similar materials. Plus, it features an origami design that’s common in Kindle covers.

▸ The design is extremely strong – so strong that you can use it as an emergency bookend for your print books. It can hold up to 7 lbs (3.2 kg) of weight.

▸ The Moft stand offers six reading angles. In portrait mode, you can choose between 25, 40, and 60 degrees. When used in a landscape position, you can set the angle at 30, 40, or 60 degrees.

▸ Most importantly, the stand can be folded to an almost invisible shape, and you can put it inside the same sleeve you use for your e-reader. Or you can place it between the books on your bedside bookshelf.

▸ The smallest and cheapest version is $29.99. Bigger ones cost $39.99 and you will be able to use them with large e-readers and print books.

4. Pillow tablet stand with a flexible arm

Pillow tablet stand with a flexible arm - best gifts for book geeks
Cozy, advanced tablet stand with a flexible arm – best hands-free reading / Image: Amazon

Our pick: Best accessory for hands-free reading

▸ This innovative pillow stand will be extremely helpful for long reading sessions. It’s a combination of a pillow and stand, letting you place your e-reader at the right height and angle no matter which position you choose.

▸ The patented construction includes a flexible arm. You can adjust its height and rotate by 360 degrees. You can put your e-reader into this flexible holder as it supports devices that are up to 7 inches. You can also put the e-reader on the pillow’s base thanks to a special hook.

▸ The pillow can be also used upside down. The arm is underneath, and you can set the angle to be able to read hands-free while you are laying on your stomach.

▸ Coziness is what the pillow is about. It’s filled with odorless foam pellets so that it can change its shape to closely fill the contact surface. The pillow’s cover is made of stretchy and breathable Lycra fabric.

▸ This pillow stand is available in two colors – Sand Orange and Stone Gray – but I expect more variants to come the moment this interesting product becomes more popular.

▸ It’s a brand-new and patented accessory, so its price is pretty high – $55.99 at the time of writing this post.

5. Long-battery, hands-free reading light

Long-battery hands-free reading light - best gifts for bookworms
Long-battery, neck reading light with three color temperatures / Image: Amazon

▸ Neck reading lights are usually large and ugly, but this new one combines flexible design with minimalist, Apple-like design.

▸ The gooseneck arm is lightweight and flexible, making it easy to fold the light to a compact size. The arm is covered with a soft silicone, for added comfort.

▸ The light comes with three color temperatures (warm, natural, and cool) and you can also adjust the brightness freely to the level that suits you the most.

▸ The rechargeable battery will last up to 6-8 hours of continuous use, and the USB-C port will let you recharge it in less than 1.5 hours.

▸ This little reading gadget looks highly innovative (and expensive) but its price is surprisingly low – $17.99 at the post of writing this post.

Our score: 7.5/10

Our pick: Best digital notebook and e-reader

▸ Are you looking for a whole new way to work with documents, make notes and jot quick thoughts? Take a look at the new, powerful Kindle Scribe e-paper device, that’s so much more than a typical e-reader.

▸ Kindle Scribe will most probably change they way you read books, work with academic publications, and review documents. It’s Amazon’s first e-reader that comes with handwriting support.

▸ This 10.2-inch device is sold with a dedicated pen. You can choose either the basic or premium one – both don’t need batteries to operate.

▸ Using the pen, you can annotate documents the way you do on paper. You can also create your own documents, checklists, or journals – and use the Scribe as a classic paper notebook.

▸ All the notes are synced with your Kindle library, which you can also access online, in your browser.

▸ The e-reader sports a USB-C port for fast charging, and a built-in Audible player. It offers up to 12 weeks of battery life. You can choose from three storage variants: 16, 32, and 64 GB.

▸ The regular price for an entry-level variant (16GB of storage and a Basic pen) is $339.99. You can expect price cuts during major shopping seasons.

Our score: 8.3/10

Our score: 8.0/10

10. Coffee and candle warmer with USB charger

This coffee mug warmer is combined with USB charger and can be used for candles as well / Image: Amazon

Our pick: Best accessory for long reading sessions

▸ What do you need to enjoy reading books to the fullest? A good book, a comfortable sofa, a cup of coffee… and the next cup of coffee. And a magical scent that will transfer you to a fictional reality.

▸ The robot is 13 in (33 cm) high, and heavy enough to be used as a bookend. Other postures are also available.

▸ The “Sitting Robot” bookshelf lamp is a little home decor masterpiece, so it’s not surprising it costs $59.99.

The Power of a Bookworm tote bag - best gifts for book lovers
The Power of a Bookworm tote bag and 12 other items / Image: Zazzle

▸ Most apparel designs for book lovers are sweet, cozy, and, sometimes, too childish. If you are looking for something totally different, check out this evergreen, vintage artwork.

▸ The retro typography text says “never underestimate the power of a reserved bookworm,” followed by “introverts rock,” and “turn the power on.”

▸ The typography combines a classic college font with a hand lettered touch, vintage ornaments, and a distinct sign of a lightning in the background.

Steampunk bedside reading lamp with speaker - best gifts for bookworms
Vintage bedside reading lamp with speaker / Image: Amazon

Our pick: The best bedside accessory for avid readers

▸ Since most e-readers offer now a front light feature, you no longer need a reading lamp that emits enough light to make the text readable.

▸ The thing is that a lamp with a cozy warm light tone is a part of reading enjoyment. Obviously, you can always light a candle, for instance the one that smells like an old library or a paperback.

▸ You can, however, go for a more functional alternative, and get a gorgeous-looking lamp that has a built-in speaker – a great solution if you love to listen to audiobooks.

Most gifted books and audiobooks on Amazon – the complete guide https://ebookfriendly.com/most-gifted-books-audiobooks-amazon-guide/ https://ebookfriendly.com/most-gifted-books-audiobooks-amazon-guide/#comments Sun, 30 Oct 2022 09:50:36 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=155970 Most gifted books audiobooks on Amazon complete guide
Most gifted books audiobooks on Amazon – how to find them + tips and things to know

The best books don’t always make the best gifts. That’s why it’s always good to know what most other users are giving as gifts. Amazon has a great tool for that – here is what you need to know.

How do you find the books you could give as gifts to your significant other, a family member, or a friend?

There are many well established tools for book finding (and I’m sure you’ve tested them many times already): book bestseller lists of all possible kinds, book awards, book reviews and gift lists from leading literary blogs, or book recommendations by social media influencers.

On Amazon only, you can easily find a few book recommendation tools and services:

Annual and daily Top 100 book bestseller lists – these rankings list the most sold books in, respectively, the current year and current day. You can browse the lists of print books and Kindle ebooks, as well as Audible audiobooks.

Best Books of the Year – these rankings list the Top 20 best books picked by Amazon editors in the most popular categories. The rankings are published twice a year (in June-July and in November-December).

Amazon Charts – these weekly lists rank Top 20 books in two categories: Most Sold (based on the number of copies sold), and Most Read (based on the number of daily Kindle readers).

These tools are great if you are looking for a book you’d like to read yourself.

The problem is that not every best selling book would make a great gift. And not every book that’s a great gift would make it to a bestseller list.

You may say that there is a special Editors’ Holiday Gift Picks section that puts together the rankings curated by Amazon editors, and that these rankings are intended specifically to help you find the best book to gift.

The problem here is the same as with book reviews or book recommendations. Someone, even the most renowned authority, may just be wrong.

And here is the solution: thousands of people who have the same goal – finding the best book to give as a gift – can’t be wrong. And you can follow their way, because they are recommending the books using their wallets.

Did you know Amazon curates the lists of most gifted items in almost every major product category? It’s a lesser-know feature many Amazon customers are still not aware of, so I have decided to give it a bit more attention.

Called Amazon Gift Ideas, this special store section puts together the Top 100 most popular products ordered by customers as gifts. These rankings are updated daily. By the way, this section’s title is misleading, because it doesn’t highlight the major benefit. The section should be called “Most Gifted on Amazon”.

As you know, you can order lots of products on Amazon as a gift. When you proceed to checkout, you will find gift options under product details. When you check the “this is a gift” option, the item you buy is automatically counted into the most gifted Top 100 list in the relevant category.

How to find most gifted books on Amazon

1. Go to Amazon Gift Ideas front page on Amazon, and from the left sidebar choose “Books” for print books or “Audible Books & Originals” for audiobooks.

2. Products in the ranking are presented the same way as in the bestseller lists, with the orange rank in the top left corner, title, author, number of reviews, and average rating. You can click on either the book cover or book details to go to the product page.

3. If you want to see books in a specific genre, find it in the left sidebar. You will see that any major genre has subgenres you can click to further specify your needs. The category structure in the lists of most gifted products is the same as in the store.

For your convenience, here are the exact links to the most gifted books on Amazon:

Books – print books that were ordered as gifts by Amazon customers. The list is updated every day.

Audiobooks – Audible audiobooks, and Audible Originals that were ordered as gifts on Amazon. The list is updated every day.

I guess that titles ordered as gifts directly on Audible website count into the list of most gifted audiobooks as well. Amazon and Audible platforms are highly integrated.

Make sure to bookmark these webpages in your browser to quickly access them the next time you want to buy a book or audiobook as a gift.

To bookmark any page in a browser, click on a star you should find in the search box. Alternatively, you can use a shortcut – Ctrl+D on a PC computer and Command+D on a Mac computer.

Most gifted books on Amazon – tips and facts

How to find most gifted Kindle ebooks on Amazon

As you have probably noticed, there is no Kindle ebooks category among Amazon Gift Ideas rankings.

In my opinion, it’s because of the Kindle for Groups feature, which is mainly used for corporate gifting. It lets you buy as many copies of a single Kindle ebook as you want, and send them to the recipients via email.

As a result, the list of most gifted Kindle ebooks would be populated by titles for professional development.

There are two alternative ways to find most gifted Kindle ebooks on Amazon:

1. Visit a page with Popular Gifted Kindle Books

It’s a selection of Kindle ebooks that is probably put together manually by Amazon editors, but it should be based on the actual number of orders as gifts.

The list includes between 150 and 200 books and it includes evergreen titles such as A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, or Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.

2. Start browsing most gifted Amazon print books

Browse the “Books” section of Amazon Gift Ideas. If you find a title that you believe is worth giving, go to its product page and order its Kindle version (if available).

Please keep in mind that many gifted print books are image-rich and usually their Kindle editions are not available.

Here are the best genres in the most gifted books category, where you can find both print and Kindle editions:

Most gifted or bestsellers – which Amazon lists are better?

I have compared the lists of the most gifted books with bestsellers, and the conclusions are:

▸ On the top level – without going to specific genres – the lists overlap in less than 10%. It’s because the most gifted books are the ones for kids, while the bestselling titles are from various categories.

▸ When you compare “Literature & Fiction” category, between 30% and 50% of titles are present on both lists. The top 5 is occupied by the books everyone is talking about, for instance, the latest novel by Stephen King. But you don’t need any of these lists to take this book into consideration, do you?

▸ I have noticed that in categories that provide both print and Kindle editions – such as literary fiction, mysteries, biographies, or romance – the list of most gifted books are more relevant.

– The books come from recognized authors. These authors write for well-known publishers, such as Simon & Schuster or Penguin Random House.

– On the contrary, the books on the bestseller lists are offered by Amazon imprints, and come from many authors that write exclusively for Amazon.

– Also, there are lots of Kindle Unlimited titles among them. As a result you may see many best selling titles that you know nothing about.

▸ My advice is to use the lists of most gifted books instead of bestseller lists. You will find hot new releases from familiar authors much quicker.

Most gifted books and audiobooks on Amazon – tips

▸ Please keep in mind that the lists of most gifted books are refreshed every day. If you visit them today, you will see the books that have been ordered as gifts in the past 24 hours.

▸ If you want to gift a book for Christmas, you should visit the lists at the time most users are buying Christmas gifts.

▸ Make sure to bookmark the lists of the most gifted books and audiobooks on Amazon in your browser to quickly access them when the time comes. Click on a star you should find in the search box, or use a shortcut: Ctrl+D on a PC computer and Command+D on a Mac computer.

▸ If you want to find the books that were most gifted in the past, you can use an online tool called Wayback Machine. It’s a digital archive of the web and collects archived copies of web pages. For instance, if you want to buy a book for your Mom for Christmas, you can use Wayback Machine to learn which books were most gifted before Mother’s Day. Here is the archive of the page made two weeks before Mother’s Day 2022.

Archived page of most gifted books on Amazon

▸ If you start browsing Amazon from the lists of bestsellers, you can quickly jump to the most gifted items by clicking on the “Gift Ideas” tab at the top of the list. The navigation bar with bestsellers, new releases, movers & shakers, most wished for, and most gifted items is available only on the front page of Amazon Top 100 lists.

▸ The lists with most gifted products are obviously available not only for books and audiobooks. You can browse all major categories, from Amazon devices, to home appliances, games, personal care products, electronics, toys, or clothing. ⇢ Browse all categories

Most gifted books on Amazon – conclusions

I think the lists of most gifted books and audiobooks on Amazon are a very helpful but still overlooked way to find books you could give as gifts for Christmas, Mother’s Day, birthday, or wedding.

A recommendation based on other users’ gift buying choices is a way to increase the chances the book you give will not end up in the present drawer.

16 best bookish decorations and ornaments for the 2023-24 season https://ebookfriendly.com/best-bookish-decorations-ornaments/ https://ebookfriendly.com/best-bookish-decorations-ornaments/#comments Sat, 22 Oct 2022 10:24:00 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=152818 These little decorations and ornaments are perfect to bring the joy of reading to Christmas, Thanksgiving, or any other festive moment in your life.

Christmas is a time when you can finally read books without any limitations. The “I don’t have time” and “I don’t have the mood” excuses simply don’t work.

Books are among the gifs you have received, and you can’t decide which one to start with. You are already making plans for a new year, and reading more books is, as usual, on top of the list.

If you are looking for little reminders that reading is one of the greatest pleasures in life, Christmas ornaments that are made of paper book pages, look like books, or include books, will be a perfect solution.

Opposite to Christmas-specific decorations with snow and Santa Claus, book ornaments can be used in many other occasions.

You can place or hang them during a birthday party, a book club meeting, or a Sunday afternoon family gathering. You can decorate your home library or children’s room. Some literary decorations look like perfect talismans!

The following overview puts together the best book ornaments from Amazon and Etsy. If you visit any of these online stores, you will be surprised to find out how few book decorations are there. You were expecting to see hundreds, while you will see only dozens.

If you still haven’t found what you are looking for, start from the beginning by exploring the list of Top 100 bestselling ornaments on Amazon.

Amazon Kindle 11 (2022) – things to know before buying it https://ebookfriendly.com/amazon-kindle-11-2022-faq-worth-buying/ https://ebookfriendly.com/amazon-kindle-11-2022-faq-worth-buying/#comments Fri, 16 Sep 2022 15:04:09 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=155271 Is the new $99 Amazon Kindle 2022 model worth buying? Or maybe you should pay extra $40 and get the shiny Paperwhite 5? This roundup will help you make the right choice.

The newest base Kindle model was announced on September 13, 2022. It was available for pre-order on the same day, with shippings starting on October 12.

It’s the 11th-generation Kindle, according to Amazon’s device classification. The 2022 Kindle model costs $99 and comes with a crisp 300 dpi display, USB-C port, 16 GB memory, and a battery that lasts up to 6 weeks.

Compared to the 6.8-inch Paperwhite 5, the 2022 entry-level Kindle is not waterproof. It doesn’t have warm light, and lacks the all-glass front. It sports a 6-inch display, with similar specs to Kindle Paperwhite 4.

Instead of presenting sheer tech specs of the 2022 Kindle, I will put its main features in the context. It will let you compare the benefits that matter to you, and help decide between this model and the 6.8-inch Kindle Paperwhite released in 2021.

By the way, the previous-generation Kindle released in 2019 is still available on Amazon. The price of the white variant dropped to $65 (most probably until the stocks are empty). For that price you will get the e-reader and a free 3-month Kindle Unlimited membership.

Amazon Kindle 11 2022 – things to know

Kindle 11 is pricier than its predecessor

Kindle 2022 vs. Kindle 2019

The newest 11th-generation base Kindle model costs $99.99. It’s $10 more expensive than its predecessor, which was released back in 2019.

Is the higher price of the 2022 Kindle justified? Yes, there are three major improvements that make the device worth its money:

  • 16 GB of internal memory – the memory size is twice higher than 8 GB in the 5th-generation Kindle Paperwhite that costs $139.99.
  • 300 ppi high-resolution display – the new display has three times more pixels than the previous model, offering sharper text and images in a paper-like feel.
  • USB-C port – the port allows you to charge the Kindle and transfer files much faster than the regular USB port used so far.

Amazon made it a rule to offer new Kindle models at constantly higher prices. The basic Kindle released in 2012 had a price of $69.99. The 7th-generation model from 2014 was $79.99, the one released in 2019 was already $89.99.

Will Amazon keep increasing the price of future generations of the basic Kindle? I doubt so. $100 is a level that would prevent from perceiving the most affordable Kindle model as, well, affordable. I believe Amazon will keep the price of the most affordable variant of the basic Kindle under $100.

Kindle 11 has twice as memory as Paperwhite 5

The cheapest version of Kindle Paperwhite 5 costs $139.99 and comes with only 8 GB of internal memory. Approximately 6 GB is available for the user. It’s enough to store thousands of text-only books or some 30-40 Audible audiobooks.

The new base Kindle model comes with 16 GB memory as a standard. System files take about 2 GB, so about 14 GB will be available for you. Will you ever be able to load your e-reader with thousands and thousands of ebooks? I doubt so.

Space matters, however, if you want to use your Kindle as an audiobook player. Instead of 30-40 full-length audiobooks in the 8 GB Paperwhite 5, you can have 60-80 of them ready to be played any time.

It’s worth noting that at launch Kindle Paperwhite 5 (Regular) was available only with 8 GB memory. Amazon added the 16 GB Paperwhite 5 variant at the time of announcing the new basic Kindle in September 2022.

You can get Kindle Paperwhite 5 16 GB for $149.99 or you can get Kindle 11 for $99.99. What’s your choice?

Kindle 11 has the similar display as Paperwhite 4

The 2022 Kindle is now the only Amazon e-reader that sports the 6-inch display. Paperwhite 5 comes with the 6.8-inch and Oasis the 7-inch touchscreen.

Is the 6-inch display large enough? Readers’ needs are evolving. Why not get the 6.8-inch Paperwhite and enjoy 13% more space for bigger text and larger margins?

Ask yourself a question: was my previous Kindle’s screen too small? You can always increase the font size or reduce margins to get the page layout that fits your needs the most.

The thing that matters the most is the resolution. And it has significantly increased. The previous-generation basic Kindle from 2019 had a display with a 167 ppi pixel density and 800 × 600 px screen resolution.

The 2022 Kindle sports the display with 300 ppi pixel density. It’s three times more pixels than the 2019 model. As a result, you will see crispier text and images. On top of that, the display is visibly whiter than the previous model. When you looked at the white version of Kindle 2019, the display appeared gray.

Amazon does not specify the resolution of the Kindle 2022 display. The 300 ppi and the display’s description – “glare-free, paper-like” – suggest that it may be the same display as the one used in the 4th-generation Paperwhite.

There is no warm light in Kindle 11

Kindle 11 front light
The 2022 Kindle 11 comes with a front light but no warm light / Image: Amazon

Front light is not the same as warm light. The first function brings light to the display, letting you read without the need of using an external source of light. The latter function is responsible for the color tone of the light – either blue or yellow/orange.

Kindle 11 has an adjustable front light – just like the previous generation. LED lamps placed around the display spread an even light over the display, making the text visible even during the darkest night.

The Kindle 11 does not have a warm light. This feature is available in the Paperwhite 5 and Oasis 3.

What is warm light? It lets you control the color of the screen. It’s delivered by the same LED lights that are placed around the display – but this time it’s not about the brightness but color of the light.

In the evening, the light changes its tone from blue (which is the color of sunlight) to a warmer yellow and orange (which is typical for the evening artificial light). Warm light will help you minimize the negative effect on sleep.

Will the basic Kindle model ever get the warm light? At some point it may happen, but only after the Paperwhite gets a new, much more advanced feature or features, such as the color display.

It’s worth noting that the light over the Kindle’s display doesn’t hurt your eyes the way tablet screens do. It’s because the light in tablets is directed from behind the display directly into your eyes. The front light in e-readers is directed from the display’s edges over the surface.

Kindle 11 released in 2022 is not waterproof

You can’t have everything for $100. Unlike the Paperwhite 6.8 or the Oasis, the new basic, 11th-generation Kindle released in 2022 is not waterproof.

Avoid taking it to the beach, swimming pool, or bathtub.

A free, 4-month Kindle Unlimited plan is included with Kindle 11

In a press release announcing Kindle 11, Amazon claimed that the new model came with a free, 4-month Kindle Unlimited subscription.

It’s a real deal, if you read a lot of books and are open to new, less known authors. If you bought a regular Kindle Unlimited membership, you would pay $40 for four months (the monthly fee is $9.99). So, when you take out the cost of the Kindle Unlimited, you could say that you bought your Kindle 11 for $60, not $100.

Unfortunately, a few days after Kindle 11 pre-orders started, there was still no option to get the device with the promised free 4-month Kindle Unlimited plan. There was only a message saying “Without Kindle Unlimited”.

I wanted to find out whether the offer was available only to Amazon customers who never tried Kindle Unlimited before. But no, after signing up with another Amazon account, no “With Kindle Unlimited” option was available either.

At some point the free Kindle Unlimited offer for Kindle 11 will go live, and it should happen on October 12, 2022 (the day shippings start) the latest.

It’s worth noting that, opposite to Kindle 11, the Paperwhite 5 was launched without Kindle Unlimited offer. The option was added later, and it includes the free 3-month Kindle Unlimited membership for 8 GB variant only.

Kindle 11 doesn’t have the all-glass front

The newest base-level Kindle is slimmer and smoother than its predecessor, with smaller width, height and depth, as well as thinner bezel around the display.

Unfortunately, there is no all-front glass over ther display, a similar solution to what we see in the Paperwhite 4 and 5.

The glass makes the Kindle look like a tablet. It’s easier to clean the device, and the bezel frame becomes “invisible.”

The white version of Kindle 11 is not available

The previous basic Kindle model, the one released back in 2019, came in two body colors: Black and White.

The 2022 Kindle model comes in Black and Denim instead. The Denim color is interesting because it’s not a dark navy blue. And it looks just perfect in a new Amazon’s original Denim fabric cover.

Will we ever see the white Kindle in the future? Right now I tend to say “no”. When the first white Kindle was launched back in 2016, I was extremely excited. The white color made the e-reader look more like a page in a physical book.

It turns out the white color variant is not so popular after all. As I said earlier, Amazon has just slashed the price of the white version of the previous Kindle to $65 (28% down), while keeping the black variant at $89.

Dark Mode is available on Kindle 11

Light and Dark Mode in Kindle 11 can be changed in the Quick Access menu / Images: Amazon

Dark Mode is a standard feature in tablets and smartphones. When you enable it, you will see white text on a dark or black background. It’s a way to reduce eye strain – a must if you are using your tablet in the dark.

Would you need a dark mode in an e-reader, a device which is way more eye-friendly than a tablet?

I am using the Dark Mode on my Paperwhite 5 quite frequently. The Kindle’s display with the Light Mode creates a glow in the dark, and it sometimes irritates my wife. And I am used to reading with a dark mode enabled in the Kindle app on my iPhone.

Generally, Dark Mode is worth trying, and in the newest Kindle 11 it is available by default. You can find the Dark Mode toggle in the Quick Access menu which slides from the top of the display.

Dark Mode is also available in the Paperwhite 4 and 5, as well as the Oasis 2 and 3. Older models don’t have it.

Kindle 11 comes with a USB-C port

The newest Kindle is the second Amazon e-reader to sport the USB-C port for faster charging and data transfer. It’s a useful feature if you still add your own books and audiobooks via the cable – copying the files will take less time.

You will need about 3 hours to fully recharge Kindle 11 via a power adapter or about 4 hours when you plug your Kindle to a computer.

However, having in mind that you will be charging your device not once a day, but every few weeks, fast charging is not the most needed feature.

The charger is not included in the Kindle 11 box

Although the new Kindle sports the USB-C port, the box includes only the cable. This cable has USB-C plug on one end and a standard USB plug on the other.

Power adapter is not included in the Kindle 11 box, but you can use your old 9W official Amazon power adapter.

Should you invest in a USB-C compatible power adapter? No, if you are going to use it only with your Kindle. You will take out the charger every few weeks, so why invest $10-$20?

However, if you have more USB-C devices at home, getting a powerful charger that features not one but two or three USB-C ports makes a lot of sense.

Kindle 11 battery may last up to six weeks

The previous basic Kindle was running up to four weeks on a single battery charge. The new model is 50% better.

According to Amazon, the 11th-generation Kindle released in 2022 may run up to 6 weeks without the need to recharge it. Battery life is based on a half hour of reading per day with the display brightness set at 13 and wireless charging turned off.

The number seems stunning, but let’s count battery life in hours instead of weeks, especially that the assumption (half an hour of reading a day) is way too limiting.

6 weeks × 7 days × 0.5 hours = 21 hours

A typical tablet, for instance any of the Amazon Fire models, can run on a single charge for around 10 hours. And you have at the back of your head that you’ll need to recharge it every night.

Kindle 11, with a 21-hour battery life, is only twice less dependent on a power socket. Imagine binge-reading holidays: you read for seven hours a day, and you have to recharge your Kindle 11 every three days.

Maybe a fast USB-C power adapter is not a bad idea, after all?

Expect the Kindle 11 price drop of up to $30 this year

The more the new Kindle costs, the more users are looking for the deals.

Can you wait until Black Friday and Cyber Monday? The chances are the newest Kindle will already be available at the price reduced by $30.

We have tracked Black Friday Kindle prices since 2016. $30 is the usual price drop for the basic Kindle model, no matter when it was introduced during the year.

Kindle 11 now costs $99.99, and it could cost $69.99 at the end of November. Are you willing to wait to save enough to get an original Amazon cover?

Kindle 11 Kids Edition is a way to save over $100

If you are looking for ways to save as much as you can on a new Kindle 11, consider getting the kid-friendly edition.

The 2022 Kindle Kids costs only $20 more than the regular version – $119.99. And it includes:

  • Kindle 11 (a version with lockscreen ads) – worth $99.99
  • A specially designed, fancy kids case cover worth $20
  • A free, one-year Amazon Kids+ membership worth $79 a year ($48/year if you are a Prime member)
  • 2-year worry-free warranty – if the device breaks, you can return it, and Amazon will replace it for free without any questions asked. A regular 2-year Kindle Protection Plan costs about $20.

Amazon claims that the 2022 Kindle Kids has a value of up to $209, but in fact it’s between $90 (if you are a Prime member) and $220.

In other words, if you want to buy just the Kindle 11 ($99) and an original cover ($29), you will spend $128 – $9 more than the Kids Edition which gives you a 2-year warranty on top of it.

Obviously, what you have to accept is a colorful kid-friendly case cover. Opposite to Paperwhite 5, no plain black cover is available for Kindle 11 Kids bundle.

When you consider getting the most affordable Kindle model, a comparison to the Paperwhite is inevitable. It’s a question of spending the equivalent of an original Amazon case cover ($30-$40).

You pay $40 more and you get a more advanced e-reader, the one that would meet not only your current needs but also the ones that may arise in the future.

So, how does the latest base Kindle released in 2022 stack up against the regular variant of the 6.8-inch Paperwhite? Let’s have a look at a comparison table.

14 best e-reader accessories for the ultimate reading pleasure (2023 season) https://ebookfriendly.com/most-useful-ereader-accessories/ https://ebookfriendly.com/most-useful-ereader-accessories/#comments Fri, 13 May 2022 09:40:37 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=154934 Check out these innovative and clever accessories that you may need for your e-reader more than a case cover.

When you buy a new e-reader, you will most probably start looking for a case to give it immediate protection.

The thing is that reading books is one of the safest activities on earth. You sit comfortably on a sofa and, from time to time, tap the display.

You need protection – but not when you are reading on your device, but when you are carrying it. And for that, you don’t need a case cover. A decent sleeve is more than enough.

The moment you find out you don’t need a case cover is the moment you can start thinking forward – about how to bring the reading pleasure to a new level.

Online stores are full of tablet and smartphone accessories, but you can hardly find the ones that are designed for e-readers. And here a bit of creativity helps. Many tablet accessories can be successfully used with e-readers, and the only goal should be defining your own needs.

The following list includes solutions for hands-free or one-handed reading, products that combine features from different categories, and products not intended for e-readers at all – but being surprisingly useful if you read a lot.

Most useful e-reader accessories

1. Pillow tablet stand with a flexible arm

Innovative pillow with a flexible arm - perfect for e-readers
A cozy pillow stand with a flexible arm for your e-reader and smartphone / Image: Amazon

Our pick: Most innovative accessory for hands-free reading

▸ This innovative pillow stand will be extremely helpful for long reading sessions. It’s a combination of a pillow and stand, letting you place your e-reader at the right height and angle, no matter which position you choose.

▸ The patented construction includes a flexible arm. You can adjust its height and rotate by 360 degrees. You can put your e-reader into this flexible holder, as it supports devices that are up to 7 inches (ca. 18 cm). Furthermore, you can also put the e-reader on the pillow’s base thanks to a special hook.

▸ The pillow can also be used upside down. The arm is underneath, and you can set the angle to be able to read hands-free while you are laying on your stomach.

▸ The pillow is extremely cozy.

▸ It’s a brand-new and patented product, so its price is pretty high – $59.99 at the time of writing this post.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models for the base; all 6-inch e-readers for the flexible arm (the 6.8-inch Paperwhite should fit, too).

2. Lap desk and bed tray in one

Laptop desk with adjustable stand and bed tray
A wooden lap desk and bed tray in one / Image: Amazon

▸ This accessory is not intended specifically for e-readers or even tablets, but I have found it highly helpful if you are looking for ways to increase the comfort of reading.

▸ This laptop desk is combined with a bed tray, and features an adjustable stand. Just raise the surface and place your e-reader to adjust the reading angle.

▸ This kind of accessory can meet most of your needs. When you want, you can use it for a Sunday breakfast in bed, working on a laptop, or reading a book – be it in print or on your e-reader.

▸ The right side of the desk stays flat, and you can place here a cup of coffee and a blow of marshmallows. Plus, there is also a mesh storage compartment for office accessories, a bottle of water, or a thermal mug.

▸ The laptop desk can be fully folded so that you can put it into a wardrobe. It’s worth mentioning that this specific model comes with adjustable-height legs.

▸ The price of the tray at the time of writing this post is $38. It is worth noting that the product is currently offered at a lower price.

✨ Compatible: All e-readers.

3. Book sleeve compatible with most e-readers

Book sleeve compatible with e-readers
A cozy book sleeve will hold not only a paperback or hardcover, but also your e-reader / Image: Amazon

Our pick: The coziest book and e-reader sleeve

▸ The problem with e-reader cases is that they fit only specific models. The problem with sleeves designed for e-readers and tablets is that they are usually boring.

▸ If you want something dramatically way more cheerful, make sure to explore a different product category – that is a surprisingly compatible with e-readers – sleeves designed to protect and carry paper books.

▸ We recommend book sleeves from Kapax. Each one closes with a Velcro on the top side, and features external pockets for a notepad, pen, or a library card.

▸ Currently, there are over ten colors to choose from, and all are stunning!

▸ The sleeves are all 10 × 8 inch (25 × 20 cm) and will fit your 6-inch e-reader with a space for a standard case cover if you need it. There will still be some place to put a small paperback book inside!

▸ The price is set at $17.99 – and that’s for the universal protective sleeve that would work with your current and future e-reader, as well as most paper books.

✨ Compatible: All e-readers up to 8 inches.

4. Foldable spider-leg stand – perfect for reading in bed

Foldable spider-leg stand from Tablift - perfect for e-readers
A foldable spider-leg stand – perfect to read hands-free in your bed or on a sofa / Image: Amazon

▸ Most stands can raise the device only a bit. What if you wanted to place your e-reader at eye level?

▸ Take a look at the clever stand from Tablift. It has a construction which resembles a four-legged spider, and on the top there is a sturdy holder.

▸ The legs are flexible, and you can form them to raise the device much higher than any standard holder. Most importantly, the legs can be folded together to take as little space as possible.

▸ The holder lets you mount a device of up to 12.9 inches (ca. 33 cm). The slots allow reading at three different angles.

▸ Tablift is a great way to read hands-free in bed, especially if you want to avoid placing anything directly on your stomach.

▸ From time to time the price drops to under $30, but regularly, you can buy it at $34.99. It may, however, go up to even $40 during annual shopping seasons (Black Friday and Prime Day).

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models of up to 13 inches.

Our score: 7.9/10

5. Powerful solar charger for electricity-free reading life

Solar charger for life without electricity

▸ E-readers are well-known for their extremely long battery life. You can recharge them every few weeks. With the new solar charger from FlexSolar, you can stay in a mountain cabin for months, not weeks, and the presence of the power outlet is not mandatory. Oh, and you will be able to recharge your smartphone, too.

▸ Most solar power banks can be recharged via solar panels only in emergencies. Their panels are small, and it takes ages to recharge the power bank enough to recharge the destination device.

▸ This 15W three-panel solar charger will make you fully independent of electricity suppliers. It can be easily folded and squeezed into a backpack, and comes with buckles to attach it where it will be most exposed to sun beams.

▸ The panels are highly efficient. The producer claims the charger converts up to 24% of solar power in favorable sunlight conditions.

▸ The special polymer surface protects the panels from water and dust. Plus, the ports are protected with sturdy rubber covers to offer the overall IP67 waterproof level.

▸ The 15W variant costs $49.99, but you can buy the cheaper 10W version ($39.99), which will recharge your Kindle (and other 6-inch e-reader) in less than an hour.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models.

Our score: 8.1/10

6. Padded, detachable handle grip and stand in one

Velcro handle and stand for e-readers
This detachable handle grip doubles as a stand / Image: Amazon

▸ When you replace the dedicated case with a sleeve, you will have several new ways to make reading more comfortable.

▸ Fintie offers an extremely clever accessory that lets you easier hold the e-reader in one hand. It’s especially helpful if you read books for long hours.

▸ Attach the handle to the back of your e-reader with a special adhesive patch. On the other side of the patch is a Velcro, which you use to attach or detach the handle itself.

▸ As the Velcro surface is pretty large, you can attach the handle to read both in a portrait or landscape mode – or whatever position and angle you like.

▸ The handle can be used in two ways. When you attach to one side, it’s a solid handle that allows you to read one-handed. The other side turns the handle into a stand.

▸ The Velcro patch comes in two sizes, so the handle is compatible with most e-readers, ranging from 6 to 11 inches.

▸ The price at the time of writing this post is $15.99  – a clever and convenient alternative to a vertical stand case.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models of up to 11 inches.

7. 100% flexible gooseneck holder

Gooseneck tablet and e-reader holder top rated
You can fix this flexible gooseneck holder is a place where you usually read books / Image: Amazon

▸ If you read books in the same place at home (probably a bed), you may like the idea of a holder that you can mount to a bedside table or the frame of your bed.

▸ From Lamicall comes a gooseneck tablet mount holder that’s extremely popular on Amazon, with over 16 thousand ratings. It can hold devices that are between 4.5 and 10.5 inches, so your e-reader should fit perfectly.

▸ Thanks to a flexible arm, you can place your e-reader exactly at the angle, height, and distance you like. It’s a great idea for anyone who wants to read books at the eye level.

▸ The holder is rotatable. You can read ebooks in either a one-page portrait mode or in a landscape view.

▸ The stand is great for passive activities, such as reading books or watching videos. It’s not suitable for writing or gaming, as it’s bouncing when you touch the display.

▸ You can choose from two colors: Gray and Black. The current price on Amazon is $24.99 – and it’s rarely changing.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models of up to 10.5 inches.

8. Fashionable portfolio e-reader bag

Portfolio e-reader hardbag
This multipurpose hardback sleeve case from Tomtoc will accommodate not only your e-reader / Image: Amazon

Our pick: The best hard cover sleeve bag compatible with e-readers

▸ If you are looking for an accessory that would accommodate more than just your e-reader, think about a portable bag that comes with several compartments and pockets, but still has the size of a mobile device.

▸ The bag from Tomtoc is intended for devices no larger than 12.9-inch, so it will fit almost any e-reader model.

▸ Tomtoc Portfolio combines a rugged EVA hard shell with soft microfiber lining to protect against bumps and scratches. Water-repellent fabric provides protection even on a rainy day.

▸ The patented ergonomic groove design and comfortable grip make it easier to carry on without drops, even if you want to avoid using the built-in handle.

▸ Inside, there are multiple compartments. You can use the main one for your e-reader, print book, or a notebook. Elasticized segments provide tight grip for cables, earphones, and other small accessories.

▸ Tomtoc offers one year worry-free guarantee. Plus, you will benefit from friendly customer service available via email and phone.

▸ You can choose from several colors, including Mixed Orange (shown above), Avocado, Gray, and Caramel.

▸ The lowest price we recorded was $29.99. Currently, it’s set at $44.99. As this is a highly popular product, you may not see a considerable price drop any time soon.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models of up to 13 inches (33 cm).

9. Steampunk light and speaker in one

Candle light and speaker in one
A vintage-looking light with a built-in speaker – perfect for listening to audiobooks / Image: Amazon

Our pick: The best bedside accessory for avid readers

▸ Since most e-readers offer now a front light feature, you no longer need a reading lamp that emits enough light to make the text readable.

▸ The thing is that a lamp with a cozy, warm light tone is a part of reading enjoyment. Obviously, you can always light a candle, for instance the one that smells like an old library or a paperback.

▸ You can, however, go for a more functional alternative, and get a gorgeous-looking lamp that has a built-in speaker – a great solution if you love to listen to audiobooks.

▸ This steampunk lamp operates in two modes. One is a warm light. The other one is a flickering candle (I love this one!). You can adjust the light brightness by rotating a switch in the base of the lamp.

▸ The wireless speaker works with Bluetooth 4.2 technology. Many reviewers have pointed out that it gives a surprisingly crisp and powerful sound.

▸ How long is the playing time? It’s the most important question for audiobook lovers. This steampunk, battery operated lamp & speaker can play audiobooks for up to 8 hours at the maximum volume!

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models for the light. E-readers with an audiobook player (such as Kindle) for the speaker.

Our score: 8.2/10

10. Weatherproof notebook zipper cover

Weatherproof notebook zipper cover e-reader compatible
This side bound notebook cover turns out to be a brilliant e-reader sleeve / Image: Amazon

▸ This product was not intended to be used with e-readers – but it serves its purpose brilliantly. It’s a side bound notebook cover from Rite in the Rain.

▸ This solid and durable is made of incredibly tough Cordura fabric that’s water and weather resistant. The pouch closes with a solid, rugged zipper closure.

▸ Inside, there are two large pockets for notebooks, on the left and right side. Each one will fit the 6-inch e-reader, excluding Nook.

▸ The cover also features four pen-size holders, and a pocket for a credit card.

▸ Rite in the Rain cover is available in the US Amazon store in three colors: Black, Tan, and Camo (they are sold as separate products).

▸ The price at the time of updating the post is $26.99, and it’s the lowest we have ever recorded.

✨ Compatible: All 6-inch e-readers with standard proportions (won’t fit Nook Glowlight).

11. Reading glasses with built-in LED lights

Reading glasses with LED lights for ebooks and print books
Reading glasses with built-in LED lights / Image: Amazon

Our pick: A clever combination of reading light and glasses

▸ Many e-readers feature the front light, but what if you read both ebooks and print books? And if you need glasses for reading?

▸ You don’t have to buy a reading lamp and reading glasses separately. You can have them in a single product.

▸ These glasses from Skyway look like standard reading glasses. They are available in 6 magnification variants, from 1.0x to 3.5x.

▸ What makes them extraordinary is two LED lights that are mounted on each side. Thanks to that, the light beams are always directed to where you are looking at.

▸ The LED lights can be recharged via micro-USB ports. Each light is operated independently, so you can use just one, and have twice the time before you will have to recharge the LED lights’ batteries.

▸ With LED reading glasses you can buy the standard – and cheaper – e-reader (without the front light), and have the problem of light fixed if you happen to read print books.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models.

12. Invisible, origami style stand and handle

Invisible origami stand for e-readers
A minimalist, origami stand and bookend in one / Image: Amazon

▸ There are hundreds of stands available online, but are they any good for an e-reader? They are, if you are planning to reuse your old device. They can also be used for hands-free reading, but, opposite to pillow stands, they are stable only on flat surfaces.

▸ My problem with most stands is they are too technological: too much metal, too heavy, and too gimmicky. They are hard to associate with reading.

▸ There is one exception – the stand offered by Moft. It feels like an e-reader cover because it’s designed in the same manner and uses similar materials. Plus, it features an origami design that’s common in Kindle covers.

▸ The design is strong – so strong that you can use it as an emergency bookend for your print books.

▸ The stand is being attached to the back of the e-reader with an adhesive patch, and you use the main part to form a stand. The main part is easily detachable.

▸ It’s worth highlighting that the stand’s design lets you use it as a grip for one-handed reading.

▸ The smallest and cheapest version is $29.99. Bigger ones cost $39.99, and you will be able to use them with large e-readers.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models, depending on the size version. Note: for all 6-inch e-readers, I recommend using the smartphone variant.

13. Vera Bradley cotton tablet & e-reader organizer

Vera Bradley cotton tablet e-reader organizer
A fashionable, floral sleeve bag from Vera Bradley / Image: Amazon

Our pick: The most fashionable e-reader accessory

▸ The moment you stop thinking about a dedicated case or sleeve is the moment endless possibilities open. What about a bag that would fit your mobile device (be it a tablet or e-reader), a print book, and a few necessary accessories?

▸ From Vera Bradley comes the most fashionable item in this overview – the Cotton Organizer. Its size makes it easy to put any e-reader that’s no larger than 8 inches.

▸ As other tablet organizers, the Vera Bradley bag comes with several utilities: two slip pockets, two mesh pockets, three card slips, four pen slips, and one ID window.

▸ The bag is made of a sustainable recycled cotton fabric and “has all the comfort, softness, and vibrancy that you know and love.”

▸ The sleeve is padded for increased comfort and protection. Plus, there is a handle to let you carry it with ease.

▸ Vera Bradley tablet & e-reader organizer is available in eight fashionable designs, including Ikat Island, Java Navy Camo, Indiana Rose, and Plum Pansies.

▸ The price is very Vera Bradley – $45. But it will serve more than your current e-reader, and will handle a few other things.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models of up to 8 inches.

Our score: 8.3/10

14. Cozy pillow stand with 6 reading positions

Best pillow stand with six reading positions Lamicall
A cozy pillow stand with as many as six reading angles / Image: Amazon

Our pick: Most versatile pillow stand compatible with e-readers

▸ From Lamicall comes one of the best solutions for hands-free reading, no matter whether you read books in a print or ebook format.

▸ The stand is cozy but extremely stable. It has strong resilience, but at the same time is hard to deform. Therefore, it can be used on any surface, be it a desk, bed, sofa, or your laps.

▸ Best of all, it combines a convenience of a pillow with features typical for desktop stands: multi-angle functionality.

▸ You can place the book or e-reader on each of the two sides, where there are three grooves that are deep enough to hold not only your e-reader, but also an opened print book.

▸ I have bought the stand for $24.99, and it’s a fair price for this innovative and sturdy pillow. If you see the price reaching $30, simply bookmark the product in your browser, and come back in a few days (weeks, to the most) to see it reduced to the usual level.

✨ Compatible: All e-reader models.

Our score: 8.5/10

Literary calendars for 12 months of your exciting reading life! https://ebookfriendly.com/monthly-literary-calendars-for-booklovers/ https://ebookfriendly.com/monthly-literary-calendars-for-booklovers/#comments Sun, 09 Jan 2022 12:53:39 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=153728 These fun literary calendars include not only the most important dates and events, but also a reading challenge for each week, a fun fact, and a bookish quote.

Some book lovers sometimes need a little reminder to reach for a favorite book or go to a library.

A literary calendar is a wonderful way to keep track of important events to celebrate and share with students or other book lovers.

The idea to design the calendars was inspired by fantastic literary calendars created by Emily Temple for Flavorwire, back in 2013.

I also used the Literary Birthday Calendar from Writers Write, and Literary Hub’s Fictional Dates in Literature (Emily Temple, again!).

For quotes and fun facts, I used our own lists, including most interesting facts about books and libraries.

Would you like to get the calendars in a quality that’s high enough to print them out in the US letter or A4 paper size? High-resolution calendar pdf files are available for download at our sister blog, Reader updated.

If you’d like to hang the calendars on a wall, I have made the designs to my Redbubble, Society6, and Zazzle shop. They are available in different sizes and finish options. Enjoy!

In the decade to come, Frank will traverse the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires with throngs of disciples in his thrall as he reinvents himself again and again, converts to Islam and then Catholicism, is pilloried as a heretic and revered as the Messiah, and wreaks havoc on the conventional order, Jewish and Christian alike, with scandalous rumors of his sect’s secret rituals and the spread of his increasingly iconoclastic beliefs.

16 gift ideas for the Kindle lover in your life https://ebookfriendly.com/best-gift-ideas-kindle-owners/ https://ebookfriendly.com/best-gift-ideas-kindle-owners/#comments Mon, 13 Dec 2021 15:44:00 +0000 http://ebookfriendly.com/?p=117898 Kindle t-shirts and other apparel, ebook subscriptions, gift cards, or literary jewelry are among the gifts you can give someone who reads ebooks using a Kindle e-reader or app.

Are there Kindle lovers in your family? You can always gift them the newest Kindle. However, gifting a new Kindle every year proves you’ve run out of gift ideas. There are more ideas at hand than you think.

If you want to give a gift to your beloved one or a family member who already owns the Kindle e-reader, you actually have more options to explore than when thinking about bookish gifts in general.

An obvious online destination to browse for Kindle-related products is an Amazon online store. You may wonder what specific items to buy. Millions of products are offered here, and it’s easy to get lost, especially if you don’t know what you are looking for.

Two specific areas that relate specifically to Kindle owners are: special services that are connected with the Kindle ecosystem, and benefits specific to paper books that a Kindle user might miss.

Most importantly, in looking for Kindle related gifts, you don’t have to limit yourself to Amazon. Sure, you will have to register an account at another service, but sometimes it’s worth the effort. There are two online stores that are particularly interesting when it comes to gift giving:

Etsy – this is the biggest online store with handmade goods. The selection of bookish gifts is impressive, so Etsy is a must-see destination, especially if you want to gift something unique in style. As all items are made to order, there are several ways to add a personal message – also for the bookish items listed below.

Redbubble – a marketplace for custom designed items, including prints, stationery, cases & covers, t-shirts & other apparel, and – most importantly – home decor items. Over 750 thousand artists sell their artwork on Redbubble, and you will surely find here the topic and style you love the most. Opposite to other merch sites, such as CafePress, the designs are much better.

In the list below, you’ll find both the digital gifts, perfect for someone who consumes digital content, and real gifts that try to fill the gap between reading print and electronic books.

Gifts for Kindle users – highlights

Best gifts for Kindle owners

1. “I love my Kindle” t-shirt

“I love my Kindle” design by Piotr Kowalczyk / Images: Redbubble

Print books or ebooks? You are not forced to choose. In fact, a majority of book lovers, who started reading on their Kindles and other devices, have found a perfect balance between the print and electronic format.

“I love my Kindle” statement doesn’t mean that you have stopped reading paper books. And it’s reflected in the artwork designed by our team member, Piotr Kowalczyk. This vintage-style design features the text:

I love my Kindle just as much as I love my print books.

Behind the typography, you will notice an engraved shape of an e-reader. Don’t worry, it doesn’t show a specific model, so it will be suitable for an owner of any Kindle.

“I love my Kindle” artwork is available on Redbubble in two colors (light and dark) on over 70 items, from t-shirts and apparel of all kinds (including caps and long sleeves), to mugs, throw pillows, bags, masks, and impressive wall art.

2. Personalized Kindle case or sleeve

Personalized Kindle sleeve - best gifts
Personalized Kindle sleeve by Modern Tally / Image: Etsy

Many people who decide to buy the Kindle, almost automatically add to the cart the original Kindle case from Amazon. It’s available in a few colors, so you have the feeling you have freedom of choice.

Case covers are the kind of the gift Kindle owners will be more than happy to receive. Covers usually get damaged faster than the Kindle they protect, so exchanging the cover for the same Kindle model is something more and more users do.

The only thing you should do is check out which cover the giftee currently owns – and try to buy a different one: by color, design, and functionality.

Let us give you advice: don’t buy the cover that first comes on a list of search results. Try to find something unique, something that would express the personality of a person you are going to give a gift.

One way is to explore cases available in several insanely colorful and fashionable color versions. Our favorite brands are Fintie and MoKo. Both of them you can find on Amazon.

You can also check out Caseable. The site offers hundreds of original designs for Kindle. Most importantly, you can personalize the artwork by adding text and changing colors – or design the cover from scratch by adding your photo.

Another option is to go for a handmade accessory, made to order. There are many gorgeous Kindle cases and sleeves available on Etsy. Many shop owners offer the option to add a text or adjust the design to specific needs of the person who orders it.

3. Book-shaped home decor

Bookish home decor - best gifts for Kindle lovers

A modern book lover stores all ebooks on a single Kindle e-reader. On one side, it’s extremely convenient, but here is the question: how to express the love for books?

It’s good to have something at home that reminds of the evening one can spend with the book and a cup of delicious coffee or tea.

Sometimes, a little home decor that resembles a good old book will make the gift recipient happier than another Amazon gift card or a boring case cover.

And you will be surprised how many great-looking, creative products you can find. You’ll even want one for yourself!

4. Kindle Unlimited subscription

Kindle Unlimited subscription - best gifts for Kindle fans
Kindle Unlimited free plan is available with most Kindle models / Image: Geek Updated

If someone is using the Kindle heavily, it means she or he is hungry for books. You can always buy them the new release from a favorite author, but here is a better idea: Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Unlimited ebook subscription gives unlimited access not only to well over a million Kindle ebooks (it’s about one-fourth of the entire Kindle Store), but also thousands of audiobooks. Current issues of popular magazines are also included.

You have most probably heard or tried this digital subscription, and consider it not attractive anymore. However, you can check out how the service is evolving, and why it makes sense to reactivate Kindle Unlimited.

If you decide to gift Kindle Unlimited, you can select one of subscription plans: 6, 12, or 24 months.

It’s worth keeping in mind to know that from time to time you can grab the Kindle Unlimited subscription at a reduced price. Amazon usually offers the deals for Prime Day and Cyber Monday. You can expect the discount is between 20% (6-months plan) and 40% (24-months) for long-term plans, or get a short-term subscription for a symbolic price.

5. Bathtub table and reading stand

Bathtub reading stand - top Kindle gifts

What do lovers of print and electronic books have in common? They most probably love to read in a bathtub.

This most relaxing time of the day can be even better if one takes to the bathroom some more things than just the latest waterproof Kindle.

Multifunctional bathtub tables are getting more and more popular. They can hold an e-reader or a print book, a cup of tea or a glass of wine, a snack, and a few tealight candles.

Most bathtub tables and tablet holders are expandable, so they will fit most tubs.

6. Kindle-branded Amazon gift card

Amazon gift card for Kindle users

Buying a gift card is the safest of all the gift ideas. On the other hand, it may suggest you haven’t spent enough time to buy the relevant gift, so you’ve chosen the most convenient way.

If you don’t know the giftee’s favorite authors, genres or book series, buying the newly released bestseller from the top author might not be a good idea. The only thing you know for sure is that the Kindle user will need money to buy ebooks.

Therefore, you can purchase the gift card, and let the giftee choose the titles.

Amazon gift cards are available in hundreds of designs for almost all occasions. Among them, you can find Kindle-branded artwork. Best of all, you can add your own photo to an e-gift card. Getting a cover of the gift recipient’s favorite novel is a great idea.

How big should be the value of the gift card? Kindle books cost between $0.99 and $12.99. If the giftee likes to read bestselling titles from big-name authors released by big publishers, the $25 gift card will be enough to buy two books.

7. Ebook bundle of a book series or author

Ebook bundles - best Kindle gift ideas

What if you very well know the book preferences of the Kindle user you want to give a gift?

Probably, she or he was reading some book series in a print format. Why not making them happy again by giving a chance to re-read favorite books on their Kindle?

One of the greatest things about ebooks is that many well-known book series can be bought in bundles, as a single ebook file that includes all parts of the series. Therefore, you don’t need to buy particular volumes one by one.

What’s most important, the bundle is cheaper than buying all parts of the series separately.

To find an ebook bundle on Amazon, go to Kindle Store and in a search box type the title of the series, followed by either “collection” or “bundle.”

8. Innovative bedside lamp

Innovative bedside lamp with USB - best gifts for Kindle users

Bedside lamps are no longer about giving you the light when you are reading a book before going to sleep. Especially that Kindle e-readers have a built-in front light.

Bedside lamps have evolved to become multipurpose appliances that meet different needs. They combine a lamp with an alarm clock, a charger, or a Bluetooth speaker.

Many modern-day bedside lamps offer adjustable brightness or an ability to control the warmth of the light. And some of them look like from the future.

The widest choice of innovative bedside lamps can be found on Amazon. For best results don’t explore only “Electronics” category, but make sure to browse “Home & Kitchen” and “Appliances” as well.

9. Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or wearables

Bluetooth headphones - best gifts for Kindle users

Now, when all Kindle models are capable of playing Audible audiobooks, it’s a great idea to gift headphones, earbuds, and portable speakers.

What you have to keep in mind is that Kindle e-readers don’t have a headphone jack. The only way to listen to Kindle audiobooks is via Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

The main advantage of Bluetooth headphones is that they are wireless. You are not limited by cables and irritated by cable mess. You can freely move around the room while the Kindle is lying on the table.

The main disadvantage of Bluetooth headphones is that you need to recharge them. Compared to the Kindle, which runs a few weeks on a single charge, you’ll need to find the power source every even day.

That’s why it’s good to buy a speaker or phones with the longest possible battery life.

10. Audible membership

Audible membership - gifts for Kindle users

Since Audible audiobooks can be seamlessly played on Kindle devices, it’s worth considering Audible as a gift. You can obviously buy a single audiobook, but here is a better idea: get Audible prepaid membership plan.

Audible gift membership can be purchased on Amazon. You can choose from four plans: 1, 3, 6, and 12-month. The 3-month plan is the most popular option. For $45 the member will get 3 full-length audiobooks and 6 Audible Originals.

You can customize the Audible gift before making it ready to give.

You can choose the delivery method (email or print), select the design from gorgeous ready-to-use layouts, and set the email delivery date.

If you choose to gift Audible membership by email, Amazon will send the gift together with easy to follow redemption instructions.

11. Miniature book jewelry

Miniature book jewelry - gifts for Kindle lovers

Book jewelry is a great gift for every woman who loves reading. For Kindle users who may sometimes miss the look of the print book, the jewelry that looks like miniature objects of desire is a clever idea.

The jewelry that includes miniature book charms is available on Etsy, the leading site with handcrafted and vintage goods made to order.

If you prefer shopping on Amazon, you can also find book-themed jewelry here. There is a new sub-store with handcrafted goods called Amazon Handmade.

12. T-shirt with a book cover art

A t-shirt with a book cover art - best gift ideas for Kindle users
Out of Print t-shirt with book cover art - gifts for Kindle users

The biggest problem with the Kindle is that nobody knows what you are reading.

One way to express you love books is wearing book jewelry, the other one is getting relevant clothing.

What about gifting a t-shirt that features cover art of the giftee’s favorite book? Out of Print Clothing offers a range of t-shirts, both for women and men. Among the designs, you’ll find The Great Gatsby, The Little Prince, and Animal Farm.

You can buy Out of Print Clothing literary t-shirts directly on Amazon.

13. Travel electronic organizer

Travel organizer for Kindle - best gift ideas

If the gift recipient already owns a Kindle e-reader, you can assume she or he has already bought a case cover.

With a growing number of electronic devices (and a growing need to keep all of them at all times), travel organizers become an important companion of every heavy tech user.

A travel organizer usually features two big compartments: one can fit a small laptop, and the other one can be devoted to store and protect a Kindle.

Plus, there are several smaller pockets for cables, headphones, chargers, adapters, and personal essentials – all cleverly organized in the smallest possible space.

14. Book-scented candle

Book-scented candle - best gift ideas for Kindle lovers

Many people who start reading on the Kindle are astonished with tons of features that make digital reading not only convenient but also enjoyable.

The only thing that’s missing is the addictive scent of an old book.

Kindle users would be more than happy if they could keep the book scent while they read an ebook. Therefore, the gift that does that will be warmly welcomed.

There is a growing number of scented candles that recreate the scent of a book and library. The chemistry behind that? A combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla.

A growing number of book-scented candles can be found on Amazon Handmade.

15. Funny Kindle quote throw pillow

Crazy people Kindle quote best gifts

If you are still searching for a gift that specifically describes the giftee’s love for the Kindle, take a look at the cozy artwork that features a funny Kindle-related quote.

Crazy people love their Kindles.

The quote comes from a book by the Irish writer Dermot Davis, “Brain: The Man Who Wrote the Book That Changed the World.” And it’s a perfect description of people’s addiction to reading on the Kindle!

The design artwork is not available on Amazon. You can grab it on Redbubble, one of the most popular online platforms for print-on-demand products based on user artwork.

There are two colors and over 70 items to choose from: t-shirts, caps, mugs, throw pillows, bags, masks, and wall art, among others.

16. Accessory for hands-free reading

Hands-free reading pillow stand for Kindle - gift ideas

For avid book readers, any idea that would make the reading session more convenient is most welcome.

For electronic reading devices, be it e-readers or tablets, buying a case with a built-in stand seems like an obvious idea. However, even for the Kindle, you can hardly find a case that features a built-in vertical stand.

That’s why it makes sense to consider an idea of a stand or pillow that will let the giftee read on a Kindle hands-free.

What kind of hands-free reading accessory are you looking for? Everything depends on where you spend the most time reading. If you usually read in bed, you would need something cozy but stable, a pillow-like stand would be the best.

12 best accessories for hands-free reading (2023-24 update) https://ebookfriendly.com/best-hands-free-reading-accessories/ https://ebookfriendly.com/best-hands-free-reading-accessories/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2021 19:22:08 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=153261 Take a look at accessories and appliances that will let you read books hands-free, be it electronic or print.

For avid book readers, any idea that would make the reading session more convenient is most welcome. Sometimes, even the most comfortable chair is not enough, especially when it’s not your back that needs some relief, but hands.

Are there ways to stop thinking about hands and focus entirely on the novel you are reading? You will be surprised how many home appliances and accessories would suit this single task.

The following overview of accessories suitable for hands-free reading is not just a plain list of tablets stands. Just the opposite. I was determined to find the products that would fit both print and electronic books.

Therefore, they could be used not just with your current Kindle model, but any book in any form, and not only in the following months but for many years.

What kind of hands-free reading accessory are you looking for? Everything depends on where you spend the most time reading. If you usually read in bed, you would need something cozy but stable, a pillow-like stand would be the best.

If the chair is the central place of your reading nook, you may need an accessory that would place the book at the eye level – a floor reading stand, perhaps?

For electronic reading devices, be it e-readers or tablets, buying a case with a built-in stand seems like an obvious idea. The problem is that most people read books in a portrait view – while most cases can be transformed into landscape stands. Stand pillows and bean bags can be a reasonable alternative.

When going through this list of innovative products, please keep in mind that an insanely convenient accessory for hands-free reading is probably standing within the reach of your hands.

Just pick up one of the books from your bookshelf, make a tent out of it, and place a print book or device on it. Happy reading!

▸ Pillow stands are usually large – too large to take them on a trip or hide in a drawer.

▸ From Ontel comes a clever solution – a soft stand that looks like a pillow on the outside but hide a foldable stand construction.

▸ The stand is made of soft but sturdy cover, and can be folded to a flat shape that can easily fit under a bed or in a drawer.

▸ The adjustable top side (between 0 and 90 degrees) is where you can place your e-reader or tablet. The front groove is high and large enough to hold a print book as well.

▸ Best of all, the pillow features a hidden storage compartment, where you can place the device or book – and there is still some place to add a few smaller accessories.

▸ The price at the time of updating this list is set at $19.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

▸ The stand offers six reading positions that you can fix by using the notches in the middle part. You can fold the holder completely so that you can take it to the library or campsite.

▸ Thanks to a large base, the stand can also be used on uneven surfaces, such as sofa or bed.

▸ It’s made of a premium stainless iron, and is painted in one of over twenty bright colors, including Lime Green, Book Brown, Morandi Pink, and Army Green.

▸ You can currently get the holder for $11.99, but it’s a limited time deal. The regular price is set at $13.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

▸ This pillow stand was designed with readers in mind. It is intended to be mainly used as a way to read books hands-free.

▸ The producer claims the Book Couch will securely keep any book and of any size – “where you are reading a paperback, hardcover, magazine, or textbook.”

▸ Obviously, the pillow will also be a great stand for tablets and e-readers, especially if you want to use it on uneven surfaces.

▸ The stand is definitely the coziest accessory in this overview, but you have to keep in mind that it also takes the most space.

▸ The price at the time of updating the list is set at $29.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

5. Portable pillow holder with pockets

▸ Here is another idea for a pillow holder that can be folded to a more portable shape.

▸ Designed and sold by our favorite accessory producer MoKo, this soft pillow holder features a movable top side that can be unfolded to form a stable stand.

▸ The stand, together with a front cradle, should accommodate an e-reader, a tablet, or a paper book (hardcovers are better than paperbacks when it comes to using them in all kinds of holders).

▸ You can fold the top back and close with buttons to form a kind of suitcase that you can carry using a convenient handle. There are also pockets on two sides where you can place your smartphone or cables.

▸ When folded, the pillow can be used as a throw pillow or neck support on a sofa or bed.

▸ The current price is $29.99, and it rarely goes down.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets (up to 12.9 inches), smartphones.

▸ If you own an e-reader and want to free your hands while reading, you have been probably considering a vertical flip stand case.

▸ This case design opens from top to bottom, and can be transformed into a standing case where the device is in a portrait position. The front cover is now a base that is large enough to use the stand in a bed or sofa.

▸ It’s a clever and convenient idea for an e-reader case. The only problem is that a single flip case can be used only with a specific device. And you can find flip cases only for the most popular models. Here are a few examples to investigate:

7. Foldable spider-leg stand for tablets and e-readers

Our pick: Best spider leg stand for tablets

▸ Most stands and tablet pillows can raise the book or device only a bit higher. What if you wanted to place the text at the eye level?

▸ Take a look at the clever stand from Tablift. It has a construction which resembles a four-legged spider, and on the top there is a device holder.

▸ The legs are flexible, and you can form them to raise the device much higher than any other accessory.

▸ The price at the time of updating this post is set at $39.99. I have not spotted any price cut yet.

✨ Compatible: E-readers, tablets, smartphones.

Our score: 8.2/10

Our pick: Best bed tray for hands-free reading

▸ If you like an idea of a large stand that you don’t have to keep on your knees, you can go one step further. Why not choosing a home appliance that combines several benefits, including a hands-free reading?

▸ A bed tray with an adjustable stand can meet most of your needs. When you want, you can use it for a Sunday breakfast in bed, working on a laptop, or reading a book.

▸ The main benefit is an adjustable stand that you create by raising a left part of the desk. You can position the stand at five different angles – a great idea if you read a lot on a sofa or in a bed.

▸ The right side of the desk stays flat, and you can use it for a cup of coffee and a tray of marshmallows. Plus, there is also a mesh storage compartment for office accessories or a bottle of water.

▸ The regular price of this lap desk is $59.99, but it’s currently down to $49.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

▸ If you want to invest in a standalone book reading stand that you cloud place by your bed, sofa, or kitchen table, this one is worth considering.

▸ Opposite to tablet floor stands – which can only hold tablets, e-readers, or smartphones – the stand is designed to be used mainly with paper books, textbooks, cookbooks, or magazines.

▸ You can adjust its height easily by using a knob, but if you want to control the angle, you will need to reach for a tool box. Thanks to the wheels, you can easily roll the stand between the places where you usually read books.

▸ The stand offers a minimalist design that will fit every home style, with a bamboo base and a reading panel.

▸ Floor stands, especially the solid ones, are not cheap. This one costs $159.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

Our pick: Best alternative floor stand for reading

▸ Dedicated book reading floor stands cost well above $100. Tablet floor stands are only for, well, tablets. If you want to read book print and electronic books, there is an alternative solution – a floor music stand.

▸ Surprisingly or not, the music stand has everything you need to read books hands-free. It offers a high adjustment, as well as the angle adjustment. It can hold an e-reader, but also a large and thick academic book.

▸ You can also use it as a cookbook stand. There are metal spring arms that will hold your book in place, no matter how think it is.

▸ Yes, but music stands are cold black. You don’t have to choose the black. Get the white one, and it will perfectly fit the light feel of your bedroom.

▸ Plus, you can detach the head of the stand and place it on a floor or kitchen table. Oh, and it comes with a carrying bag.

▸ Most music stands cost below $50 on Amazon. This one is currently available for $35.99.

✨ Compatible: Print books, e-readers, tablets, smartphones.

▸ The non-slip silicone shelf will hold your device even if it’s in a case, and the cradle is large enough for devices that are up to 18 mm in depth.

▸ The pillow is covered with breathable mesh fabric which can be detached and washed. The zipper lets you use the internal space for cables and other small accessories.

▸ The price of this compact bean bag is $24.99. We have never seen it go down.

✨ Compatible: E-readers, tablets, smartphones.

12. Innovative pillow stand with flexible arm

Our pick: Most innovative pillow stand for reading

▸ If you are looking for accessories that you can fully adjust to your needs, take a look at the stand that combines a flexible holder with an innovative pillow.

▸ The pillow is filled with odorless foam pellets. As a result, it can change its shape to closely fill the contact surface – a bed, desk, or your knees. The cover is made of stretchy and breathable Lycra fabric.

▸ The other part is a cozy-looking arm that ends with a device holder. The holder is compatible with smartphones, e-readers, and tablets that are up to 7 inches. Unfortunately, there is no way to mount a print book here.

▸ The arm can be rotated by 360 degrees, and you can also adjust its height “to meet the comfort of watching the screen in different postures, and effectively soothe your neck and spine.”

▸ The best thing is that, thanks to a hook in the pillow’s top side, you can place here an even larger device.

▸ The current price is set at $55.99, but sometimes, especially during hot shopping seasons, it goes down below $50.

✨ Compatible: Holder: smartphones, tablets, and e-readers that are up to 7 inches. Pillow hook: devices that are up to 12.9 inches.
