If you want to get Prime Day deals on the Kindle, wait for Prime Day. None of the earlier deals is equally attractive.
Since the beginning of May, your news feed may have been crowded by articles from major news and tech sites saying that “Prime Day deals have arrived early,” or announcing “massive Amazon deals with Prime Day prices.”
These article are misleading. The highest price drops on Amazon devices are offered on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Full stop. The same price cuts you can get on Prime Day – but only if you are Prime subscriber. Full stop.
During other shopping events, including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Memorial Day, Amazon never offered price drops that were equally high, if “equally” doesn’t mean for you a price cut that’s 20 or 30% less attractive.
So, if you are waiting for highest possible deals on Amazon devices, including Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, you should wait till the beginning of July.
The date of Prime Day 2019 won’t be revealed by Amazon until the last weekend before the actual event. For sure it will be Tuesday, either July 9 or 16. Main Kindle deals, as most others, will be revealed on Monday. Before that date you may expect special offers on Amazon subscriptions and digital content, including Kindle Unlimited pre-paid plans.
Below, you can quickly go through our predictions for Kindle deals offered for Prime Day 2019. They are based on analysis of price drops offered during previous Prime Day and Black Friday events.
Prime Day 2019 – expected Kindle deals
Basic Kindle (2019)
The newest basic Kindle e-reader was released on April 10, 2019. It arrived with a long-expected and very helpful front light, which will let you read in the dark without the need to use a detachable reading lamp.
Adjustable front light, smoother design, and a display with higher contrast caused the regular price of the 2019 Kindle go up to $89.99, compared to $79.99 of the previous-generation model.
What Prime Day 2019 price can we see for the Kindle 2019 e-reader? It should go down to $59.99. You will not see the $49.99 price tag, however.
Amazon was always most eager to cut prices on the cheapest model. For instance, the previous-generation basic Kindle was launched on July 7, 2016, and a month later its price was slashed by $30 for Prime Day 2016.
Plus, we’ve seen price cuts on the newest Kindle already. For Mother’s Day 2019, it was offered for $69.99, so the price was reduced by $20.
On the other hand, the newest model has everything that would make it the best selling Kindle e-reader this season. It has a front-light, Audible support, and comes with three months of Kindle Unlimited for free. If its sales exceed Amazon’s expectations, the chances to see a price cut higher than $20 are really small.
Things can change after Amazon removes Kindle Unlimited offer. Then the price would go down below $59.99, that’s for sure. The only question is: will it happen on Prime Day 2019?
Kindle Paperwhite (2018)
As you may remember, there was no Black Friday 2018 deal on the 4th-generation Kindle Paperwhite, which started shipping on November 7 – three weeks before Black Friday. The time gas was simply too small to offer a price drop. Especially that the newest Paperwhite came bundled with a highly attractive six-month free Kindle Unlimited plan, not mentioning waterproof design.
The first deals on the newest Paperwhite started in early December. Valentine’s Day shopping event included the $30 price cut; the same during National Reading Month 2019.
Then, Mother’s Day deals were launched. The Paperwhite was offered at a price reduced to $89.99. It was the first $40 price drop on the newest model. Usually, it took much longer to get to that point.
Can we expect a big Prime Day 2019 deal on the 4th-generation Paperwhite? Sure! The price should drop to $89.99, that’s for sure. The question is: can it go even lower – to $79.99?
My prediction is that it won’t. There are two major factors that we should take into consideration.
First one is the entry-level Kindle. Equipped with the most sought-after front lighted screen, the basic model most probably has started cannibalizing the Paperwhite. That’s why the price of the latter was pulled down so much for Mother’s Day.
But there is also a launch of the white version of the Kindle Paperwhite. It should happen before Prime Day 2019, so that users could switch their attention from the basic Kindle (which is available in both white and black variant since the very beginning). It will allow Amazon to keep the deal price at $89.99, instead of cutting it to $79.99.
Kindle Oasis (2017)
Usually, top-shelf Kindle models don’t go on sale during major Amazon shopping events.
Kindle Oasis was offered at a reduced price only once for Prime Day. It happened in 2017, and it applied only to the most expensive version with cellular connectivity. The deal was symbolic – 14% off the list price.
Can we expect the Kindle Oasis deal on Prime Day 2019? I would risk saying that we can.
If there won’t be any major upgrade (and it doesn’t look like it’s coming), the 2nd-generation Oasis will be already two years old this October.
A price cut during a major shopping event would be a way to keep the Oasis in the loop. Especially that the 7.8-inch Nook GlowLight Plus has been launched – and would draw attention of users who are looking for larger-screen reading devices.
If the price of the basic version of Kindle Oasis (8 GB, with special offers, for $249.99) goes down to $199.99 this Prime Day, I would not be surprised at all.
We are preparing Prime Day 2019 price check on all Kindle and Fire models, so stay with us.
